A historic copy of Action Comics #1, once owned by actor Nicolas Cage, has made headlines after selling at auction for a staggering $15 million. This sale sets a new benchmark as the highest price ever paid for a comic book.
Originally released in 1938, this iconic issue features the inaugural appearance of Superman. The comic was in Cage’s possession until it was stolen from his home in 2000. Luckily, the book was recovered over a decade later and transitioned through ownership when Cage sold it at auction.
The Landmark Debut of Superman
Action Comics #1 is not just a comic; it is a cornerstone of comic book history, celebrated for introducing Superman and laying the groundwork for modern superhero narratives. Current estimates suggest that fewer than 100 copies of this legendary comic still exist, with a mere handful remaining in excellent condition.

The historic copy of Action Comics #1, auctioned for $15 million, was acquired by an anonymous bidder.
The record-setting sale of $15 million not only breaks the previous high price for Action Comics #1 but establishes a new record for any comic book sold to date. The particular copy sold was graded CGC 9.0, one of the best-preserved examples of this issue, significantly contributing to its sky-high auction price.
Nicolas Cage, a dedicated comic enthusiast who took inspiration from Marvel’s Luke Cage for his stage name, purchased this treasured issue in the 1990s. After its theft, the comic was recovered from a storage locker in 2011, at which point Cage sold it at auction for $2.2 million.
Matt Nelson, President of CGC, commented on the monumental sale, stating: “This sale reflects not just the rarity of the book, but its unmatched historical importance. Superman is the original superhero, and Action Comics #1 remains the single most iconic comic ever published, ”as quoted in a statement following the auction.
