Leading up to the anticipated TikTok ban set for January 19, 2025, there was a notable surge in users migrating to Xiaohongshu, commonly referred to as RedNote. The app swiftly rose to prominence, climbing to the top of the App Store’s free app rankings, overshadowing established competitors such as ByteDance’s Lemon8 and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Impact of the TikTok Ban Extension

However, the momentum was short-lived. On January 20, Trump signed an executive order that extended the enforcement of the TikTok ban for an additional 75 days. The result was swift, with users returning to the familiar TikTok platform almost immediately.

  • This decline continued, with an average decrease of 17% between January 20 and January 22.

As a consequence of declining interest, RedNote has fallen from its previously prominent position, now ranking as the thirteenth most popular free app on iOS. This decline places the app beneath notable platforms such as Threads, Bluesky, and Temu.

Despite the potential for TikTok to remain active in the U. S.until April, it has yet to be reinstated in either the Apple or Google App Stores. The app was removed on January 18 in anticipation of the impending ban, leaving many users grappling for alternatives.

In fact, some former TikTok users are turning to platforms like eBay, where they are purchasing used iPhones that come pre-installed with TikTok; this demand has led to extraordinary prices.
