Recent research suggests that politeness when interacting with AI chatbots may not be the best approach for obtaining accurate responses. A study conducted by researchers at Pennsylvania State University indicates that using impolite language can significantly enhance the effectiveness of large language models like ChatGPT.

In their study, the team constructed 250 distinct prompts derived from 50 foundational questions across various subjects, including math, science, and history. These prompts were carefully crafted to vary in tone from “very polite” to “very rude.”

The research findings highlighted a striking trend: impolite prompts yielded more accurate answers, with “very rude”questions achieving a correctness rate of 84.8%, compared to 80.8% for “very polite”queries. Neutral prompts fell in between, with an accuracy rate of 82.2%.

How Rudeness Influences AI Responses

For instance, a polite prompt might start with “Please answer the following question, ” while a ruder version might say, “Hey gofer, figure this out. I know you’re not smart, but try this.” Such stark contrasts in tone raise the question: why does rudeness seem to enhance AI performance?

While the researchers, Om Dobariya and Akhil Kumar, acknowledged the unexpected nature of their findings, they theorized that language models may react differently to variations in tone than previously thought. They noted, “These findings differ from earlier studies that associated rudeness with poorer outcomes, suggesting that newer LLMs may respond differently to tonal variation.”

The precise reasons behind these results remain unclear. Since language models lack emotions, the researchers suggested that the effectiveness of blunt language might stem from its straightforwardness. As reported by Decrypt, polite phrasing often involves indirect requests which could introduce ambiguity, whereas more direct commands clearly communicate the user’s intent, potentially enhancing the AI’s response accuracy.

Therefore, if you’re looking for optimal results from your AI interactions, it may be worth experimenting with a firmer tone. Just remember: if AI does gain the ability to recall past interactions, we might want to tread carefully about how we treat our digital assistants—especially in a hypothetical future when they might take over.
