Developers of Resident Evil Requiem express uncertainty about whether their upcoming game will evoke the same heart-pounding chills that fans have come to expect from the iconic series over the years. With the talented Koshi Nakanishi, director of Resident Evil 7, at the helm, this new installment promises to bring players into expansive environments, enhanced survival mechanics, and a deeper focus on psychological horror.

Are We Still Scaring Players?

Nakanishi candidly shared, “We’ve made so many of these that we can’t tell anymore until someone else plays it, ” in a recent interview with IGN. He mentioned feeling a mix of anxiety and anticipation before showcasing their design at events like Summer Game Fest (SGF) and Gamescom, recognizing that the team’s long experience in horror might actually cloud their judgment about the fear factor of the game.

This uncertainty creates a unique dynamic during the development process, influencing the team’s brainstorming sessions. According to Nakanishi, as they conceptualize key set pieces, they often find themselves questioning whether an idea is too intense or not terrifying enough.

He elaborated, “We didn’t really implement it, so it wasn’t cut, but we don’t know if something’s scary. So we say, ‘we’ll do this, we’ll do that, ’ and we keep adding elements. At one point, we considered having [the character Grace] suffer a horrific injury, like getting a severe gash or having her leg amputated, because of an attack. But we talked ourselves down a little bit.”

Resident Evil Requiem, initially unveiled at Summer Game Fest 2024, aims to merge the claustrophobic suspense characteristic of Resident Evil 7 with the grander scale seen in Resident Evil Village. Early hands-on previews from Gamescom highlight the game’s ability to create a sense of looming dread, leading players through a mix of constricted pathways and expansive, perilous environments.

Ultimately, whether Requiem can recreate the same level of terror that defined earlier titles will only be revealed when it becomes available for players in 2025.
