Double Eleven has finally brought Red Dead Redemption to PC, 14 years after the game’s initial launch. This PC edition features numerous settings for customization, including support for ultrawide monitors, enhancing the overall experience. However, this improvement is limited to gameplay sections, as cutscenes remain pillarboxed, resulting in black bars while playing on ultrawide displays. Fortunately, a patch developed by Rose from the widescreen community resolves this issue.
Resolving the Ultrawide Cutscene Issue in Red Dead Redemption
The patch created by Rose effectively eliminates the black bars from cutscenes when playing Red Dead Redemption on an ultrawide setup. This adjustment offers a smooth transition without any known issues so far.
- Visit this GitHub link
- Download the latest patch file by selecting RDR.ultrawide.v1.0.1.zip found under Assets
- Extract the contents of the zip file into your Red Dead Redemption installation directory
- Start Red Dead Redemption and wait for the Main Menu to appear
- Minimize the game and execute FixApplicator.exe
Once these steps are completed, the cutscenes will display in the correct ultrawide resolution according to your settings. Below is a screenshot shared by Rose demonstrating the fix in action:
Kudos to Rose for creating and thoroughly testing the patch with various resolutions including 2560×1080, 3440×1440, 3840×1080, and 5760×1080. This update is compatible with both the Steam and Rockstar Games Launcher editions.
While this solution is a significant improvement, we hope developers will continue to enhance their support for the game and refine its current functionality. The inclusion of pillarboxing may have been intended to preserve the original cutscene framing and prevent awkward visual artifacts.
