Resolving Ultrawide Cutscene Problems in Avowed on PC

Obsidian Entertainment’s latest title, Avowed, marks its debut on the Unreal Engine 5 platform, impressively blending technical prowess with stunning artistry. Players on PC will experience smooth performance across a range of hardware configurations, complemented by customizable settings and support for ultrawide monitors.

While many developers are now adopting support for ultrawide displays at launch, Avowed’s implementation is limited to gameplay segments only. However, the dedicated modding community has stepped up, with a notable individual, Lyall, releasing a patch that extends ultrawide support to the game’s cutscenes as well.

Enhancing Cutscene Experience for Ultrawide Players

The patch by Lyall effectively eliminates pillarboxing—those frustrating black bars—during cutscenes, ensuring a seamless experience for users with ultrawide displays, whether they’re playing, watching cutscenes, or engaging in dialogue.

Installing Lyall’s patch is a straightforward process, allowing players to easily enhance their gaming experience:

  • Ensure Avowed is completely closed
  • Visit the official GitHub page
  • Select Steam/Battle.net or Xbox under the Installation section to download the appropriate patch for your gaming client.
  • Extract the downloaded zip file into the game’s installation directory.

Once the files are extracted correctly, cutscenes in Avowed will render at ultrawide resolution, providing a more immersive experience. While there may be occasional frame discrepancies, the overall fix performs well. Lyall even shared a screenshot that illustrates the improved visuals with the patch applied:

Lyall deserves full credit for both creating and testing this patch, enhancing the gameplay experience for many players.

If you ever wish to revert the installation, simply delete the files included in the zip archive.

Given the current landscape of game development, it is unlikely that official ultrawide support will be extended by the developers themselves. As many cutscenes are designed for standard aspect ratios, it may take time before ultrawide monitors receive comprehensive support across all titles.

Aside from this relatively minor shortcoming, Avowed’s PC port remains robust, showcasing the capabilities of the Unreal Engine 5. Once you’ve addressed the cutscene functionality, don’t miss out on our guide to obtaining powerful abilities in Avowed!
