Time Cut is an intriguing horror film that incorporates time travel and follows a teenager on a quest to rescue her sister. Here’s the breakdown of how the conclusion unfolds, and whether she manages to achieve her goal.
This Netflix original weaves elements of time-travel with slasher themes, setting the stage in Sweetly, Minnesota in 2003, shortly after a string of brutal murders targeting local teenagers.
As Summer Field (portrayed by Antonia Gentry) mourns her friends who were killed, she herself meets a tragic end. Fast forward to 2024, her sister Lucy (played by Madison Bailey) is now of a similar age and is left to cope with the loss of Summer.
However, Lucy discovers a way to change the past when she stumbles upon a time machine hidden in a barn early on in the film. This device propels her back to the week when the horrific murders happened. Will she manage to save her sister or will her actions lead to a catastrophic paradox that disrupts the space-time continuum? Continue reading for answers, but beware of POTENTIAL SPOILERS…
The Central Paradox in Time Cut
While Lucy joins forces with her new ally Quinn in an effort to save Summer, she comes to a startling realization: if she successfully prevents Summer’s death, it may cause their parents to choose against having another child, which threatens her own existence.
This dilemma intensifies during Sweetly’s ‘Spring Fling,’ the night Summer was murdered. The horrific cycle of events begins to repeat, with the slasher once again stalking Summer into a barn.
As Lucy attempts to gather the necessary anti-matter for her time travel back to the present, she discovers a chilling truth: the time machine actually belongs to the killer, indicating he is also a traveler from the future.
Unmasking the ‘Sweetly Slasher’
At the moment the Sweetly Slasher prepares to dispatch Summer with a scythe, Lucy and Quinn intervene dramatically by crashing a truck into the assailant, sparing Summer’s life. However, the identity of the murderer is then revealed—it’s none other than Quinn from the future.
The older Quinn pursues the younger version of himself and the sisters back to his residence, where he meticulously discloses his motivations while plotting to eliminate them all.
“Everyone overlooked me,” he laments. “I was invisible to all. They treated me terribly. And then the river incident happened. Oh the river. They tossed you [Young Quinn] in. And Summer, she ridiculed you while you screamed. And from there, things spiraled further downwards. She made it worse.
“Do you remember when I wrote you [Summer] a letter? I bared my soul, and you dismissed me, stating that you could never reciprocate my feelings because I was a loser. That’s when I decided to escape by plotting against Summer, eliminating all her close friends, and then vanishing through time.”
In a bold move, Lucy activates the time machine, sending both future Quinn and herself back to the future. They engage in a fierce struggle in a parking lot, culminating in Lucy electrifying him with a charging cable before plunging a knife into his chest, effectively ending the threat.
Following this intense confrontation, Lucy chooses to journey back to 2003, eager to reunite with both her sister and young Quinn. “You are meant to be here,” Summer tells Lucy. “This is your destiny.”
