Nintendo has unveiled important details regarding the pricing and launch of its upcoming Virtual Boy accessories, along with some aspects that may deter potential buyers. These announcements come as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to revitalize interest in this unique gaming experience.
Originally released in the United States in 1996, the Virtual Boy struggled to gain traction, falling short of the success achieved by its predecessor, the Game Boy. Ultimately, Nintendo discontinued support for the 3D-centric console after only a handful of game releases.
Pricing and Availability
According to the official Nintendo store, the full-scale replica of the Virtual Boy console is priced at $99.99. For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, a cardboard and foam version will be available for $24.99. Both models are set to launch on February 17, 2026, and will be compatible with both the original Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2.
Accessory Requirement for Play
Nintendo has made it clear that to access the Virtual Boy Classics game lineup, players must have one of the newly announced accessories. These games will be available through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack service. According to the official product description:
“To play games in the Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics, you will need an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Either this accessory or the Virtual Boy (Cardboard Model) for Nintendo Switch 2/Nintendo Switch (sold separately) is required to play Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics.”
This requirement for the accessory seemingly stems from the unique stereoscopic 3D technology employed by the original Virtual Boy. However, it raises questions about the necessity of these accessories. Will it be possible to use more affordable stereoscopic 3D glasses, typically available for around $5, as an alternative to these new accessories? Only time will tell as the launch date approaches.
Curious gamers will be eager to learn more about the specifics of gameplay and compatibility as the release of these accessories draws near.
