A recently uncovered patent from Sony has unveiled an ambitious design for a future PlayStation controller that completely eliminates physical buttons in favor of a touchscreen interface.
Sony regularly files patents, though the vast majority of these filings never translate into actual products available to consumers. Nevertheless, they offer valuable glimpses into the innovations being pursued by major players in the gaming hardware arena.
In exploring Sony’s past patent filings, we’ve encountered intriguing concepts ranging from AI interventions in gaming to innovative tools aimed at expediting game development. While many of these ideas have yet to materialize into tangible products, they provide a captivating insight into what the next generation of PlayStation could entail.
Revolutionary Touchscreen Controller Development
The latest patent, first reported by VGC, proposes a significant innovation: a controller that may represent the evolution of the DualSense, completely devoid of traditional buttons. Instead, it will feature an expansive touchscreen.
This particular patent was originally filed in February 2023 and was disclosed to the public in early 2026. It outlines a controller that utilizes a large touchscreen interface, designed to foster unprecedented customization for users.
As highlighted in the patent description, “One of the drawbacks of existing designs may be the fixed configuration. A fixed layout may be too small or too large for a user. Similarly, a fixed layout may not be comfortable for a user.” To address these limitations, this new controller aims to provide users with the flexibility to adjust and tailor their control scheme as they see fit.


For example, if gamers prefer to position the D-Pad on the right side of the screen, they can easily adjust it accordingly. In scenarios where certain inputs, like the Triangle button in a racing game, are deemed unnecessary, users have the option to remove them, allowing for a more streamlined interface. This versatility could lead to an array of configurations tailored to individual preferences.
Furthermore, the patent emphasizes the integration of pressure and heat sensors, which would help accurately detect button presses. This innovation is designed to prevent accidental inputs that might occur with mere accidental contact on the touchscreen.
Another essential aspect includes the controller’s ability to recognize individual users, automatically reverting to their preferred layout. This feature would eliminate the need to constantly remap controls, particularly when sharing a single controller among multiple players. As indicated in the patent, “There exists a desire for game controllers to allow for different configurations and accommodate hand sizes without having to customize or manufacture controller size.”
While the potential for this novel design is exciting, it is important to recognize that there is no guarantee that this concept will transition from the ideation stage to actual production. Many patents remain as theoretical blueprints, leaving us to wonder if this may represent the future of the PS6 controller. Only time will tell.
