David Baszucki, the co-founder and CEO of Roblox, has ignited a vigorous debate following his suggestion that incorporating prediction markets into the gaming platform could be a “brilliant idea.” This proposition raises questions about the ethical implications, particularly concerning child safety on a platform frequented by younger audiences.
Roblox is a widely utilized platform that serves as both a social network and a creative space where users can build, publish, and enjoy games. It attracts a diverse demographic but is particularly favored by children. However, in recent years, Roblox has faced various lawsuits and legal challenges, particularly from states like Texas and Louisiana over concerns related to child safety. The situation has escalated to a complete ban in Qatar for similar reasons.
The company’s responses to these issues have faced scrutiny. A notable example includes the ban of investigative YouTuber Schlep, who was targeted for exposing how predators misuse the platform to exploit minors.

Controversy Surrounds Potential Prediction Market
On November 21, Baszucki appeared on the New York Times’s ‘Hard Fork’ podcast, where the conversation shifted to the idea of integrating prediction markets into Roblox. When co-host Kevin Roose posed a hypothetical scenario about allowing children to wager with their in-game currency, Robux, Baszucki remarked on the complexity of such a feature.
“We would — I think we would have to do that, ” Baszucki stated, acknowledging the varying legal landscapes concerning gambling and loot boxes across different countries. He expressed his enthusiasm but recognized the complicated nature of implementing such a system legally.
Although Roose interjected, labeling the concept a “terrible idea, ” Baszucki maintained his perspective. He described his vision for a prediction game titled “The Dress to Impress Predictor, ” indicating it would not be about extracting money from kids but rather providing an educational experience within the gaming environment.
Prediction markets operate as platforms where users can place bets predicting the outcomes of future events, similar to a stock market but focused on forecasting across various domains such as politics and sports. This concept raises ethical considerations, especially since a significant portion of Roblox’s user base is under 18 years old.
Despite the ethical concerns raised by Roose, Baszucki asserted the safety of Roblox, stressing ongoing improvements to the platform. He invited more in-depth discussions regarding the robustness of their safety measures, stating, “Roblox is an amazing platform right now for your kid.” He also hinted at forthcoming enhancements, including AI-driven facial recognition technologies intended to verify user ages and provide a safer experience by limiting interactions based on age groups.
