Roblox Mandates Facial Scans or ID Verification for Unfiltered Chat

Roblox is set to implement stricter age verification protocols, resulting in significant transformations in how users engage and communicate on the platform.

Starting shortly, users who wish to utilize unfiltered text chat and access new social functionalities will need to verify that they are over the age of 13. To facilitate this, Roblox is introducing an innovative age estimation system that requires users to submit a video selfie. This selfie is then analyzed against an extensive and varied dataset to accurately estimate the user’s age. As stated by the company, “the selfie is analyzed against a large and diverse dataset to estimate their age.”

If the system lacks sufficient confidence in determining the user’s age, access to the requested features will remain restricted. A spokesperson for Roblox emphasized this point, stating, “If the system is not able to estimate the user’s age with high confidence, then the user’s age will remain unconfirmed and the user won’t be able to access Trusted Connections, ” as reported by The Verge.

For users who do not successfully verify their age through the selfie but are in fact over 13, an alternative method will be available: they can upload a government-issued identification document.

Significant Updates to the Roblox Friends Feature

These new regulations are part of Roblox’s broader initiative to enhance social interactions on the platform while ensuring user safety. As part of this overhaul, the Friends list will be rebranded as Connections, and a new category called Trusted Connections will be introduced. Only those classified as Trusted Connections will have access to unfiltered chat as well as the newly launched Party feature, enabling users to connect in private audio calls.

According to Roblox, users aged 13 to 17 will be allowed to add each other as Trusted Connections upon age verification. If a teen wishes to connect with someone who is 18 or older, they will need to demonstrate an existing real-life relationship, which can be verified by scanning a QR code in person or utilizing the Contact Importer feature.

The primary objective of these updates is to grant older users greater privileges while ensuring the safety of younger members. This strategy aims to prevent sensitive or inappropriate materials from reaching unintended audiences.

Roblox currently holds an E10+ rating from the ESRB, indicating that it is suitable for players aged 10 and older. With a diverse user base spanning various age groups, the platform is banking on advanced tools, such as age estimation technology, to better manage this extensive demographic.
