Rockstar Games has recently been named in the UK’s 2026 report of employers falling short on their National Minimum Wage obligations. The iconic developer, known primarily for the Grand Theft Auto franchise, was cited for failing to adequately compensate five employees at its Edinburgh studio, resulting in a total underpayment of £1, 396.73 (approximately $1, 800).

Involvement of Rockstar North in HMRC Enforcement Action

Rockstar Games UK Limited, the entity managing Rockstar North, made an appearance on the HMRC enforcement list that was released on March 19. This issue concerns staff working at the company’s Holyrood Road office in Edinburgh, which has now been mandated to repay the owed wages and associated penalties.

The average amount underpaid translates to about $372.65 per affected employee, a figure that aligns with what HMRC typically categorizes as minor payroll errors identified during their standard enforcement operations.

Rockstar North: A Key Player in Game Development

As the main studio for Rockstar Games in the UK, Rockstar North plays a crucial role in developing the beloved Grand Theft Auto series. The studio is currently engaged in creating Grand Theft Auto VI, set for release in November 2026, a highly anticipated title among gamers worldwide.

While Rockstar Games has not issued a public statement regarding this underpayment issue, it has previously addressed other concerns related to the same studio, which included unexpected employee dismissals in late 2025.

This situation unfolds within a larger context of UK labor law enforcement, which has seen hundreds of companies being held accountable for underpaying workers. In the latest enforcement round, employers were ordered to repay over £7 million (approximately $9 million) back to affected employees.

Adding to the complexities, there was an explosion reported at the Rockstar North building earlier this year, leading to a swift response from emergency services and a police cordon being established.
