One of the significant challenges players face in Borderlands 4 occurs during the Recruitment Drive quest. Here, you’re tasked with obtaining clearance for an elevator, which can quickly frustrate those progressing through the game.
After navigating the initial tutorial and battling foes to customize your gameplay settings, the pace of the mission can feel jarring as you find Claptrap awaiting you on one side of a locked elevator. Unfortunately, the game does not provide clear guidance on where to find the necessary clearance, leading many players to wander aimlessly or retrace their steps unnecessarily.
However, the solution is closer than it seems if you know where to look. Below, we detail how to unlock the elevator and continue your adventure with Claptrap in Borderlands 4.
Finding Elevator Clearance in the Recruitment Drive
Upon reaching the elevator at the conclusion of the Recruitment Drive quest, you’ll quickly realize that the controls are unresponsive. Many players might assume there’s a bug or that an activation switch has been missed, but the reality is that you require access clearance from a nearby corpse.
Your first step is to turn around and examine the area near the railing adjacent to the elevator platform. You should see the lifeless body of a Timekeeper bandit leaning against a crate.
Approach the body and interact with it; you will retrieve a Bolt, serving as the key needed to activate the elevator.

It’s important to note that this interaction prompt can be easily missed, as it only appears when you are very close to the body. Ensure you move in close enough for the prompt to display.
After securing the Bolt, return to the control panel and activate the elevator. Claptrap will then be able to join you on your journey, allowing the mission to progress to the safehouse sequence.
Successfully completing this task not only clears the Recruitment Drive quest but also unlocks your first safehouse, marking a pivotal moment where the overarching narrative begins to unfold. Overcoming this elevator puzzle serves as your inaugural challenge in Borderlands 4.
