India Explores Using Crocodiles and Venomous Snakes for Border Security

India is currently considering a highly debated strategy for border security that involves utilizing crocodiles and venomous snakes as a form of “biological barrier” along specific areas of its border with Bangladesh. This proposal is being explored by the Border Security Force (BSF) as part of efforts to find innovative alternatives in regions where conventional fencing methods are impractical due to challenging terrain and frequent flooding.

Reports indicate that substantial portions of the border remain inadequately secured, with difficult geographical features and fluctuating water levels hindering the construction of effective barriers. As highlighted in a recent article, around 20% of the total border is still unfenced; specifically, of approximately 530 miles, about 110 miles are deemed unsuitable for traditional fencing solutions.

Innovative Approaches to Border Security

In a communication dated March 26, officials from the Border Security Force instructed field units to evaluate the operational feasibility of introducing these reptiles into the border regions. Discussions regarding this unconventional strategy reportedly began as early as February 2026 during a meeting led by BSF director-general Praveen Kumar.

While officials have related the concept to a possible “biological barrier, ” it remains in the preliminary phases of assessment. There are growing apprehensions among experts regarding the challenges of managing wildlife in uncontrolled environments and the potential hazards this could create for neighboring communities.

Moreover, wildlife specialists caution that the concentration of predatory species in these border areas could upset existing ecosystems, leading to unforeseen safety risks. This proposal emerges amid ongoing efforts from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration to bolster border security, including the integration of modern technologies such as drones and infrared surveillance systems.

It is important to note that the idea of deploying reptiles for border control is still under evaluation and forms part of a broader array of strategies being considered to enhance national security.
