A significant event unfolded just days prior to the premiere of the Netflix documentary Twister: Caught in the Storm. Tara Fleming, a featured star in the film, was reported missing two days before it officially debuted.
Tara Fleming, who plays a central role in the documentary focused on the devastating Joplin tornado of 2011, was last seen in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her ex-boyfriend, Steven Weersing, who is also the father of her two children, shared the distressing news (via Daily Mail).
The couple’s connection dates back to their high school days, coinciding with the tragic event of the Joplin tornado, which resulted in the loss of 158 lives and left more than 1, 000 individuals injured.
Tara Fleming’s Disappearance and Plea for Help
A missing persons report was filed on March 17, 2025. In a now-deleted Facebook message, Weersing expressed grave concern. He wrote: “If anybody or any of Tara’s friends have seen or heard from Tara, please let me know. This morning I received a very alarming and distressful call that she was in Tulsa, had her phone, purse, and car stolen, and was very scared.”
He added further details about the situation, stating: “The few people who were with her during the incident are acting suspiciously and their stories don’t add up. If anyone has any information regarding her whereabouts, could you please let me know?”
It’s important to note that Weersing had a traumatic experience during the 2011 tornado, which left him in a medically induced coma for three weeks due to severe injuries, including a flesh-eating infection. The pair’s romance blossomed as Fleming aided him throughout his recovery journey.
The documentary delves into the overwhelming impact of the Joplin tornado, detailing personal stories alongside shocking statistics of the tragedy.
Though their relationship continued until 2017, it took a troubling turn when Weersing faced charges related to second-degree domestic assault, accused of choking Fleming during an argument.
Weersing’s current girlfriend, Lena Dawn, also reached out on social media regarding Fleming’s disappearance, stating: “Has anyone seen or heard from Tara Fleming? She was reported to last be in the Tulsa, OK area and has an active missing persons case.”
After some time, Weersing updated his Facebook followers, announcing that Fleming had been located but was reportedly stranded in Tulsa and unable to return to Joplin.
Twister: Caught in the Storm is now available for streaming on Netflix, providing insight into the harrowing events of that fateful day.
