According to a recent rumor, Sony may be getting ready to launch a new handheld device that is capable of playing PlayStation 4 games.
Despite Sony releasing a new portable PlayStation handheld just a few months ago, the PlayStation Portal and its limited remote-play options were not able to match the capabilities of other handhelds such as the Steam Deck, Miyoo Mini Plus, and various Ayaneo devices currently available on the market.
Despite the PS Vita being Sony’s last handheld to natively support its own game library, it was released 13 years ago and official support ended in 2019. However, recent rumors suggest that Sony may be developing a new PlayStation handheld that offers much more than their current PS Portal offerings.
According to a recent post on the messenger app Telegram, Sony may be in the process of developing a new PlayStation Portable that will have the ability to play PS4 games. The information was originally shared by Russian journalist Anton Logvinov and later translated by members of the ResetEra message boards.
Logvinov confirms that Sony is working on a new PSP for release, but expresses frustration that the launch lineup only includes PS4 games which are already available on PC and the Steam Deck. Retail chains are also skeptical of this lineup and it is unclear if Sony is planning something different or if they are keeping secrets from their partners.
Despite the lack of an official statement from Sony, this news, which was first revealed by ResetEra user Iroshino, should be considered a rumor and approached with caution. Nevertheless, this same Russian journalist has a history of accurately leaking information, particularly regarding the release of PlayStation-exclusive games on PC.
The new rumor also has a longer lifespan, as back in February of this year, a well-known leaker named Moore’s Law is Dead announced that a new PlayStation handheld was in the works. According to their YouTube Channel, the leaker stated that AMD is currently developing the upcoming handheld, which could potentially be compatible with games from both PS4 and PS5.
It is highly probable that both Moore’s Law is Dead and journalist Anton Logvinov are discussing the same device. However, it should be noted that there is no mention of PS5 compatibility in this recent rumor. Logvinov simply states that the rumored lineup for this proposed PlayStation handheld will consist of “only PS4 games.”
