Russell Crowe’s Thoughts on Starring in Superhero Movies

Russell Crowe’s perspective on superhero films may not be empathetic, but his reasoning is completely logical.

Crowe is no stranger to films in the superhero genre. In fact, he has recently been cast in a new Marvel movie, Kraven the Hunter, set to be released by Sony on December 13, 2024. Additionally, he has also appeared in DC’s Man of Steel (and reprised his role in Zack Snyder’s Justice League) as well as Thor: Love and Thunder.

Having said that, the man has considerable experience when it comes to discussing his involvement in such films. In a recent interview with British GQ, he offered fresh perspective on his thoughts about the genre, ultimately emphasizing the importance of maintaining realistic expectations.

Specifically, he was questioned about his perspective on Dakota Johnson’s statements regarding large-scale superhero movies such as Madame Web, set to release in 2024. Johnson had expressed her belief that these types of films can often come across as being “created by a group.”Nevertheless, Crowe maintains a pragmatic outlook when it comes to taking on roles in such productions.

“While I do not wish to comment on what others may have said or their own experiences, I must say that you are highlighting the mischievous side of my humor,”he said. “You’re telling me that you joined a Marvel movie and some sort of universe for animated characters, and you didn’t get enough emotional depth from it?”

I am not entirely certain how I can improve this for you. These movies are filmed on a large scale, and there are limitations to the size they can be produced at. I have encountered this issue while working on the DC side with Man of Steel, under the direction of Zack Snyder, and on the Marvel side with Thor: Love and Thunder, produced by Disney. I have also faced this challenge in the Marvel dark universe, produced by Sony, while working on Kraven the Hunter.

“These are employment opportunities,” he emphasized. “You understand: your task is to fulfill the role. If you anticipate this to be a transformative experience, I believe you are here with misguided intentions.”

Crowe’s portrayal of Kraven is reminiscent of his role in Man of Steel, where he plays the father of a young boy who eventually transforms into a powerful and heroic figure. However, unlike Kraven’s father Nikolai Kravinoff, Crowe’s character is not portrayed as a morally upright individual. The upcoming Kraven film will be the sixth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man universe and has been in development since 2016.
