The Prime Video film has never ceased to be talked about for its “scandalous” scenes, yet there is a mystery that has not yet been resolved: that of its title.
It was released at the end of November, but Saltburn is not a Christmas film. The work available on Prime Video gave many spectators a cold sweat, andstories around certain scenes made the rounds on social networks. Not to mention, of course, the surprising merchandising made around Emerald Fennell’s feature film.
Starring Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike, the film is officially presented by Prime Video with this summary: “Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), a student at Oxford University, finds himself drawn into the world of charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi), who invites her to Saltburn, the vast estate of his eccentric family, for a summer that will always be remembered.”
But where does the name Saltburn come from, exactly? It was director Emerald Fennell herself who offered an answer to the question.
Saltburn director reveals explicit meaning behind film’s name
During an interview with Access Hollywood, Saltburn director Emerald Fennell revealed how the film got its name. According to the filmmaker, the word sounded like a “sexual wound.”
“I was asked why it was called Saltburn, and at first I said it was a real town in England, but when I heard the name it sounded like a sexual injury,” said Fennell said, before adding: “But a really nice injury. Like a pleasant injection. And I think that’s kind of what the film represents.”
Faced with the explanation, actress Rosamund Pike jumped in, causing the journalist to laugh: “She [Fennell] gave me a Saltburn.”
Obviously, there is not much surprising here: the film draws a lot on the springs of sensuality, temptation and eroticism – to the great dismay of many spectators who will consider these scenes “scandalous” . But far from casting the film, this advertising on social networks will have given it more visibility.
