A middle school recently experienced a temporary lockdown due to an erroneous identification by an artificial intelligence (AI) detection system that mistook a student’s clarinet for a weapon. This incident took place on the morning of December 9 at Lawton Chiles Middle School in Oviedo.

According to reports from WKMG, the lockdown was initiated when surveillance cameras detected what appeared to be a firearm in a school hallway.

False Alarm: Instrument Mistaken for a Weapon

The school’s principal, Dr. Melissa Laudani, communicated with families explaining that the student was innocently carrying their clarinet in a manner that led the automated system to categorize it as a potential threat. In response to the situation, Oviedo Police clarified on Facebook that the Code Red alert was enacted as a precautionary measure.

Dr. Laudani assured the community that there was never a genuine threat on campus, emphasizing that the automated system functioned correctly by responding to what it perceived as a dangerous scenario.“We have implemented multiple layers of security, including an automated detection system for potential threats. Unfortunately, the way the student was holding the instrument led to this precautionary measure, ” she said.

Following confirmation from school staff and law enforcement that the item was indeed a musical instrument and not a firearm, the Code Red alert was lifted. Dr. Laudani also took the opportunity to urge parents to discuss the serious implications of mimicking weapon behavior on school grounds, emphasizing the importance of safety and awareness.
