Nintendo icon Shigeru Miyamoto has announced a significant shift in his involvement with the beloved Mario franchise, stating that he is relinquishing much of the day-to-day responsibilities to a new generation of developers. At 72, Miyamoto’s experience and legacy in the gaming world remain invaluable, yet he now seeks to empower younger talent to continue the evolution of Mario.
In a recent interview with Japanese publication Casa Brutus, translated by VGC, Miyamoto reflected on his changing role within Nintendo.“Nowadays, I have teammates who help maintain the world of Mario, so I entrust much of it to them, ” he remarked. Nonetheless, he emphasized his active engagement by playing the initial segments of new Mario titles to ensure they embody the franchise’s essence.
Transitioning Leadership of the Mario Franchise
Miyamoto’s decision to step back isn’t a sudden move; he previously indicated his desire to mentor up-and-coming staff as early as 2015. This shift allowed newer developers, including Yoshiaki Koizumi and Takashi Tezuka, to take the lead on projects like Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. His latest remarks clarify that he is now prioritizing mentorship over hands-on creation.
While Miyamoto steps into a more advisory capacity, he remains involved in significant developments within the Mario universe, including the anticipated Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which is set for release on April 3, 2026. His insights and guidance are crucial as the film approaches its final production stages, a project he describes as “fun.” He reassured fans saying, “We’re in the final stages of production now, but I think it’s going to be fun. I usually just say, ‘I’ll keep working on it until it becomes fun, ’ so that alone should tell you how confident I am.”

As Miyamoto gradually hands over the reins to younger directors and producers, he aims to ensure that the spirit of Mario not only continues but thrives in future installments. His focus is squarely on the future, guiding the development of the franchise to new heights while remaining a cherished part of Mario’s grand legacy.
