“Shining Watermelon”, which premiered at the end of last month, features “CODA”(Children Of Deaf Adults, hearing children of deaf parents) as the protagonist. The first two episodes captured the hearts of the audience with its touching plot.
“Shining Watermelon”is a fantasy youth TV series. The plot describes the musically talented CODA boy Enjie, who travels back to 1995 to form a band with his father when he was a boy. It is starring Li Yun from “The Love of Flower Scholars”and “Twenty-Five”, starring Choi Hyun-wook in “Twenty-One”, Seol In-ah in “Dating in the Society”and Shin Eun-soo in “Bad Dad”.
The first two episodes start with the childhood of Ha Eun-jae (played by Jung Hyun-joon). He is a “CODA”. His parents and brother are both deaf. He is the only hearing person, so he is the channel for communication between his family and the outside world. One day, he was bullied by the landlord’s son Byeong-ho (played by Kim Ha-yan), and accidentally met the owner of Viva Music Guitar (Guitar) Store (played by Cheon Ho-jin, Eun-jae calls him “Grandpa”) and started his musical talent. “This is a code-like symbol created between musicians. Putting CODA at the end of the music means it’s time to prepare for the beautiful ending. You are also CODA, the person who connects the sound world and the silent world, using language If you play with hands, I will occasionally use music like you.”Grandpa said to Enjie warmly, and Enjie grew up with a dream of music. However, in his sophomore year of high school, he faced a fork in the road. He wanted to continue to be a gifted student. Are you proud of your dad, or do you want to make your favorite music?
A fire that occurred when he was a child has always been in Enjie’s (played by Li Yun) heart, making him afraid to pursue his dream wholeheartedly. At that time, in order to find his grandfather, Enjie left his sick brother alone at home and accidentally encountered a fire. His father (played by Cui Yuanying) mistakenly thought that Enjie was still inside and rushed in desperately… Although his father was not seriously injured, Enjie had always been I remember my father once said, “I will save myself first no matter what,”and he did so because this family needs him. Grandpa passed away on the day of the fire. Ha Lee Chan and his best friend Oh Ma Joo (played by Ahn Do-gyu) formed the “First Love Memory Band”, and mistook Eun-gye for Yoon Dong-jin, and the Yoon Dong-jin in 2023 is a guest role played by the famous YB band lead singer Yoon Do-hyun. Another surprise guest appearance is iKON’s Goo Jung-hye, who plays the lead singer of the band that Eun-jae will join in 2023.
“Shining Watermelon”had ratings of 3.1% and 3.4% when it first aired. The warm interaction between Eun-jae and his family, as well as the master-disciple relationship with Viva’s boss moved many viewers. Li Yun played the restrained and repressed Eun-jae, and Choi Hyun-wook Li Can, a cheerful and lively young man, was praised for his performance, and the cast, including child stars Jung Hyun-jun, Riyun, Choi Won-young, Seo Yeong-hee and Bong Jae-hyun, also won praises from the audience for their dedicated performance after practicing sign language diligently.
