Solo Game Developer Offers Credits to All Respondents; Over 200,000 Participated

A solo game developer’s recent initiative to include strangers in his game’s post-credits has taken social media by storm, attracting an astonishing response of over 200, 000 individuals. The game in question is Dragon’s Chronicles: The Dark Demon King and the Sword of the North Star, an indie title that many may not have heard of until now.

While it might not enjoy the same fame as franchises like Stardew Valley, it has caught attention for an unusual reason. Marketed as “Coming Soon”on Steam, the game’s developer, Takashi Mochibe, has aimed to achieve the remarkable feat of constructing one of the longest credit rolls in indie game history.

The Viral Announcement from a Solo Developer

Credits in indie games typically run short due to the small teams behind them. However, Mochibe’s post on X aimed to change that dynamic. He called for likes from anyone willing to see their name featured in the credits, expressing his challenge with listing their contributions due to limited names.

[Recruitment] I’m currently creating the credits for the ending, but since I’m working on it mostly by myself and a few other people, the length isn’t quite enough. So, if you have no connection to the project but would be okay with being included in the credits, please like this post and I’ll include everyone. If no one applies, I’ll fill it in with about 100 fictional Vietnamese people.

In his announcement, he humorously stated: “I’m currently working on the credits and, since the game is almost entirely a one-person project, I lack sufficient names. If you don’t mind being included, please give this post a like. If no one responds, I’ll resort to filling the credits with about 100 fictional Vietnamese names.”

The post has become a viral sensation, racking up 18.2 million views and 226, 000 likes at the time of this article’s publication, numbers that continue to climb.

In a follow-up update, he revealed that around 6, 000 names had already been incorporated into the credits. Despite the overwhelming list of contributors, with 99% categorized under “special thanks, ” Mochibe noted that the ending sequence was far too brief, creating an unconventional display never seen before in gaming.

Despite these challenges, Mochibe remains committed to fulfilling his promise. He plans to create a two-part video to highlight as many of his supporters as possible, showcasing their contributions in an innovative manner.

For context, the current record for the longest end credits belongs to the game Mighty No.9, which features a staggering duration of 3 hours, 47 minutes, and 50 seconds, thanks to crediting all 67, 226 Kickstarter backers. It will be fascinating to observe whether Dragon’s Chronicles can surpass this remarkable achievement.
