Special Operations: Lioness renewed for a season 2, with a big change

Taylor Sheridan’s action series is tipped to return for a season 2 – but it could differ from the first season in some ways.

The name Taylor Sheridan may ring a bell: he created the very popular series, Yellowstone, with Kevin Costner, but also its spin-offs (1883, 1923 and others to come).

He is also an accomplished director, helming Wind River and Those Who Want Me Dead. And if he tends to specialize in the western genre, the filmmaker is capable of visiting other horizons, notably in the series with Mayor of Kingstown or Tulsa King for which he was a screenwriter.

Its latest series Special Operations: Lioness was launched on Paramount+ in 2023, where it met with impressive success, becoming the most watched production in the history of the streaming platform. Unsurprisingly, a season 2 was in the cards: we’ll tell you what it is.

Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness series would return for a season 2

Season 2 of Special Operations: Lioness would be confirmed, according to Daniel Richtman – but the series should evolve in its second season, modifying both its structure and its casting.

According to the insider: “Lioness has been renewed for a season 2. The series will be an anthology series and the next season will have a new cast. It will be set in Mexico and will focus on the war against the Mexican drug cartel.”

The first installment of the series starred Zoe Saldana as Joe, the CIA officer in charge of the Lioness program, in which female officers are trained to infiltrate terrorist groups and prevent future attacks. Nicole Kidman played Joe’s superior, while Laysla De Oliveira played Cruz, a recruit brought into the program.

In a previous interview with Comic Book, Zoe Saldana addressed the chances of Lioness returning for a second season: “I’ve heard things here and there. I hope this is planned. We were nervous, Nicole [Kidman] and I. We had hope. We were so optimistic that the series would find its audience.”

“But it’s a female-led show, where women are in charge. And they wear hats that men normally wear. And then, when we started the promotion, our press tour, we were hit by a strike. So we were swimming against the tide. Knowing that the first month after the release of Lioness, it became the most watched series on Paramount+ at that time…”

De Oliveira was also interviewed by TVLine, asking about her character’s presence in the Season 2 storyline. Her response was evasive, but encouraging: “You know what? I don’t know. In all honesty, I’m in the same boat as you. I remain available! But I think whatever Taylor has planned, if he has something planned, it will be great.”

For those who have not yet discovered the series, Special Operations: Lioness is available on Paramount+.
