Splitgate 2 Returns to Beta Following Challenging Launch

Splitgate 2, the anticipated follow-up to the popular arena shooter, has been reverted to beta after facing significant challenges post-launch and mounting criticism from its player base.

Initially released in June 2025, Splitgate 2 was set to capitalize on the immense success of its predecessor, which debuted in 2019. The original game, created by the indie developer 1047 Games, garnered a massive player following, boasting over two million daily users with its novel mix of “Halo meets portals” gameplay mechanics.

With a larger budget and an expanded development team for the sequel, expectations were notably high. However, the launch quickly became problematic. The game’s reveal at the Summer Game Fest was overshadowed by controversy, as co-founder Ian Proulx made a controversial political statement during the presentation.

In a candid joint statement, the Proulx brothers acknowledged their miscalculations, admitting that the team “bit off more than we could chew” and confirmed that Splitgate 2 was released in an unfinished state. Consequently, the game has been placed back into beta to undergo extensive reworking.

According to the developers, the upcoming rework aims to enhance gameplay flow, improve map designs, revamp the progression system, and refine monetization strategies. They also committed to reintroducing classic game modes, intensifying the emphasis on portal mechanics, and minimizing past mistakes.

In a bid to finance these necessary changes, 1047 Games has announced layoffs affecting several staff members. Furthermore, as part of cost-reduction measures, the original Splitgate servers are set to be deactivated next month.

“Rebuilding the core experience isn’t a quick fix, ” the studio emphasized.“It’s a long-term commitment.” This strategic pivot is reminiscent of the recovery stories from other renowned titles such as Final Fantasy XIV and Cyberpunk 2077, both of which saw successful revitalizations through significant updates following rocky launches.

Despite these hurdles, 1047 Games aims to keep the game active while they implement updates and collaborate closely with the community to reshape Splitgate 2 into a better version of itself.
