Spotify has unveiled an exciting new in-app messaging feature that allows users to effortlessly share music, podcasts, and audiobooks with friends and family. This innovative update, known as Messages, began its rollout on August 26 and is now accessible to both Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets.
The Messages feature enables users to share content directly by tapping the share button on the Now Playing screen. From there, they can select a contact they’ve interacted with on Spotify to send a direct message. These messages support text interactions, emoji reactions, and multimedia sharing, enhancing the way users connect over their favorite audio content. Users can easily access their conversations through their profile icon, which leads to an inbox of all message threads.
Spotify also curated a list of suggested contacts, prioritizing those who have collaborated on playlists, participated in group listening sessions through features like Jams or Blends, or engaged in event planning. To ensure user privacy, Messages are encrypted both during transmission and when stored, although they do not utilize end-to-end encryption.
In addition to enhancing connectivity, Spotify has implemented safety features that allow users to accept or decline message requests, block unwanted senders, and report content that violates their community guidelines.

Spotify’s Messaging Renaissance
This introduction of Messages signifies Spotify’s renewed focus on direct messaging, a feature it previously abandoned in 2017. The launch comes in the wake of Spotify reporting an impressive 696 million monthly active users as of the second quarter of 2025, reflecting its ambition to capture a staggering 1 billion users.
The addition of this feature is a strategic move to enhance the social aspects of the platform, setting it apart from competitors such as Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music. By fostering connections through messaging, Spotify aims to create a more engaged community around its musical offerings.
As this feature gradually makes its way to users globally, Spotify has confirmed that all eligible accounts will gain access in the upcoming weeks. This development follows closely on the heels of another notable update—introducing a new DJ feature that allows users to customize song transitions, further enhancing the listening experience.
