In a shocking turn of events, **Squid Game Season 3** brings back the notorious VIPs, but with a dark twist that sheds light on their motives and actions. The show’s creator, **Hwang Dong-hyuk**, reveals the troubling reasons behind the VIPs’ unexpected involvement in the brutal games.
In *Episode 3*, titled *Hide and Seek*, the VIPs re-emerge in a sinister fashion. They don disguises as guards and take on a more hands-on role, executing the remaining contestants directly, which starkly contrasts their previous depiction in Season 1 where they merely observed the carnage from a distance, enjoying the horrors without any direct involvement.
The Sinister Transformation of the VIPs in Season 3

In a recent interview with GQ, Hwang shared his vision for these characters: “In Season 1, the VIPs acted as mere spectators. However, I wanted to alter their role in this season by having them directly impact the game’s dynamics.”
He elaborated, stating, “The VIPs now reflect the reality of how political and economic figures often manipulate rules for personal gain. I wanted their actions, such as executing players post-*Hide and Seek*, to be indicative of that ruthless power play.”
Although Hwang didn’t specify any particular politicians or events from the time since the first season’s launch in 2021, he did mention the **United States** as a significant influence during a separate interview with TIME.

Hwang remarked, “Historically, the true power brokers operated in secrecy, shrouded in conspiracy. This has shifted dramatically, especially in America, where today’s tech giants openly declare their influence and affiliations.”
He observed, “We frequently discuss oligarchy in contemporary discourse, and these tech moguls no longer conceal their power. They boldly proclaim, ‘We are in charge. We dictate the rules.’”
Interestingly, while the VIPs are styled without any direct resemblance to specific individuals, Hwang did acknowledge some physical traits that might evoke comparisons to **Elon Musk**.
