Squid Game Creator Responds to David Fincher’s American Remake Controversy

David Fincher is currently working on an adaptation of the hit series Squid Game, this time set in America, but creator Hwang Dong-hyuk feels unconcerned – it remains “his world” regardless.

Squid Game holds the record as Netflix’s most successful series to date. It continues to be the streaming service’s top original title, surpassing other popular shows like Stranger Things, Wednesday, and Bridgerton.

This intense survival drama has carved its path into pop culture, and as anticipation builds for Squid Game Season 2, plans for franchise expansion are underway. Netflix has already introduced Squid Game: The Challenge, an engaging reality competition spin on the original concept, and now David Fincher is being considered to create a new English-language series.

Details about whether this project will be a remake or a distinct story within the Squid Game universe remain uncertain.

At a press gathering for Season 2, Dong-hyuk remarked, “As of now, I don’t think it’s official… But as a filmmaker, I hold Fincher in high regard. I am a fan of his work, and if he chooses to create a remake or his own spinoff of Squid Game, I will be eagerly looking forward to it.”

He added, “I believe he could craft an excellent spinoff. I’m genuinely curious about his interpretation of the Squid Game universe, and I’m excited for it. He is enriching my world, yet it remains my world.”

The initial feedback regarding Fincher’s involvement in a Squid Game remake was mixed; after all, the original series exploded in popularity despite its subtitles, illustrating that a compelling narrative can transcend language barriers, which some argue makes an English adaptation unnecessary.

Nonetheless, Fincher’s filmmaking style may suit the Squid Game concept well. If you haven’t seen his 1997 film The Game, it’s worth watching—it tells the story of Michael Douglas, who becomes engulfed in a perplexing game that alters his reality.

During the conference, Dong-hyuk also noted that Season 2 will differ significantly from its predecessor. “This time around, we’ve incorporated many new elements. As you watch Season 2, it will feel both familiar and refreshingly different,” he stated.

Mark your calendars: Squid Game Season 2 is set to debut on Netflix on December 26. In the meantime, discover the origins behind Gi-hun’s striking red hair and explore other shows available for streaming this month.
