Steam has recently implemented a significant update regarding how game review scores are presented to users on the platform. This change aims to enhance the shopping experience for gamers by providing more nuanced insights into game quality based on language-specific feedback.
When considering a new game purchase, many Steam users typically begin by examining its review score. This metric serves as a crucial indicator of whether the game is worth the investment. By displaying these scores prominently on the store page, Steam allows users to quickly gauge the general reception of a title without having to delve into individual reviews.
Overview of the New Language-Specific Review Scores
As of August 18, 2025, Steam has introduced a revamped system that features language-specific review scores for certain titles. According to a recent blog post from Steam, this innovation was designed to “help customers make informed decisions when considering the purchase of a new game.”

This illustration demonstrates how titles with sufficient reviews will now display language-specific scores, reflecting the perspectives of users speaking different languages.
The updated scoring mechanism means that a game can exhibit diverse review scores contingent upon the language of the reviews. The rationale behind this change includes various factors such as translation inaccuracies, cultural nuances, and fluctuations in network performance, which the previous overall review score system could not adequately address.
As per Steam’s announcement, “Calculating a language-specific review score means that we can better distill the sentiment of these different groups of customers, and in doing so, better serve potential customers that belong to those groups.”
Criteria for Language-Specific Review Scores
This new feature will only affect titles that meet specific criteria: they must have at least 2, 000 visible reviews with a minimum of 200 reviews in a single language. The decision to set these thresholds higher than the original requirement of 10 reviews for the overall score was made to ensure confidence in the validity of the language-specific scores before they are shown to users.
Moreover, games equipped with language-specific scores will adopt a modified interface, presenting reviews in the user’s primary language, showcasing recent feedback, and offering the option to view a breakdown by language.
Importantly, the language-specific review scores are enabled by default. However, for those who prefer the traditional overall review score, it is possible to adjust account settings within the store preferences.
In this evolving gaming landscape, such innovations underscore the importance of nuanced consumer insights. By tailoring review scores to reflect cultural and linguistic contexts, Steam aims to support users in navigating their gaming choices more effectively.
