Netflix has released a new creature feature, which has received praise from ‘Master of Horror’ Stephen King who described it as “really quite good”and its climax as “amazing.”
Despite being a busy man, Stephen King manages to write a novel every year. In addition, he makes time to read books and watch numerous movies and shows, which he then recommends to his seven million Twitter followers.
This week, Stephen King’s interest was sparked by the new scary movie Under Paris, a Netflix film with aquatic horror. He was so intrigued that he took to Twitter to share his thoughts, writing the following tweet:
Initially, I assumed Under Paris would be a comedic film, similar to Sharknado. However, thanks to Twitter’s persuasion, I decided to give it a chance and was pleasantly surprised. The final 25 minutes of the movie were truly outstanding.
Despite the Sharknado comparisons, he is correct because the official synopsis for Under Paris presents it as a parody: “Paris, a renowned city for its beauty, culture, and culinary delights. However, with a threatening creature on the loose, this capital is heading towards catastrophe.”
The ominous creature in question is a colossal shark, and its attack happens to take place during a Triathlon, resulting in numerous swimmers in the water. As expected in a horror film, chaos ensues in the Seine.
Despite the high concept and silly story of the streaming service’s film, Under Paris maintains a serious tone. Both leads, Berenice Bejo and Nassim Lyes, deliver performances as if they were in a drama where real lives are on the line.
Director Xavier Gens successfully transforms something absurd into an engaging disaster film. This culminates in the highly praised last 25 minutes mentioned by King, which must be witnessed to be fully appreciated. Furthermore, these final moments set the stage for a potential sequel.
Despite a pending lawsuit, Under Paris continues to dominate the top spot on the Netflix charts. It is highly likely that an announcement for Under Paris 2 will be made in the near future.
