Throughout the Jujutsu Kaisen series, Ryomen Sukuna has been known as the Undisputed King of Curses, instilling fear in people for centuries. This reputation is well-deserved, as during the Heian Era, he mercilessly defeated numerous sorcerers and spread terror across the world.
Despite the ongoing storyline of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, Sukuna continues to outmatch and control the majority of the characters through his immense strength, clever strategies, and extensive understanding of Jujutsu sorcery.
Despite this, a recent fan theory on social media has emerged and seems to imply that, contrary to his current portrayal, the King of Curses may not hold the title of strongest character in the series.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Fan theory proposes the existence of Sukuna’s true master
In the Jujutsu Kaisen series, Ryomen Sukuna has consistently displayed his power as the King of Curses. However, a recent fan theory about X has sparked discussion about the potential connection between Gege Akutami’s magnum opus and Christianity. This theory suggests that Ryomen Sukuna and Anjiro, possibly the first and only master of the King of Curses, may be linked in some way.
On the well-known social media site X, @TheYonahS2 initiated their theory by asserting that the names of certain characters in Jujutsu Kaisen, such as Ryomen Sukuna, Tengen, Uraume, and Kenjaku, are, in fact, titles rather than their true names.
Additionally, the user argued that Sukuna’s designation as “The Fallen”is simply a rebellious title, implying that he was once referred to as an “angel,”a term typically reserved for Christian sorcerers during the Heian Era. However, this raises numerous inquiries, the most significant being Sukuna’s connection to Christianity.
The user proposed a theory to answer the question, suggesting a possible connection to Anjiro, the first Japanese Christian. @TheYonahS2 added to this theory by mentioning that Anjiro is depicted as the first Japanese “angel”in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. This interpretation is supported by Anjiro’s role as an interpreter for Francis Xavier, who introduced the concept of God and sacred texts during his missionary work in western Japan.
The user placed great emphasis on Anjiro’s life before and after his conversion to Christianity, specifically focusing on his transformation from a samurai wrongly accused of murder to Xavier’s loyal disciple. Additionally, the user suggested that sometime between Anjiro’s unsuccessful mission in Japan and his passing, he may have mentored Ryomen Sukuna.
The internet user believes that Sukuna may have sought guidance during his lifetime, potentially driven by his remorse for killing his twin brother or the rejection and scorn he received because of his curse.
Despite presenting a contrasting aspect of his personality, the user theorized that Sukuna may have initially rejected his dark side and turned to Anjiro for help. Given Anjiro’s past as an assassin, it is possible that he took Sukuna under his wing, becoming his mentor and guiding him towards becoming a more powerful and improved individual.
Despite their initial bond, it is likely that Sukuna’s inner darkness ultimately caused the downfall of his relationship with Anjiro. Once he strayed from his moral code, it is conceivable that Sukuna would have rebelled against his master and eventually surpassed him in power. Perhaps it was only after Sukuna’s victory over Anjiro that he gained recognition for his unmatched strength.
As time went on, Sukuna gave in to his inner desires and fully embraced his monstrous nature, ultimately becoming known as a “Fallen Angel.”Despite attempting to better himself under Anjiro’s guidance and adhering to the peaceful principles of Christianity, Sukuna’s innate demonic tendencies could only be suppressed for a limited period of time.
Despite having no opposition, Sukuna earned the title of the King of Curses due to his endless rampage. Straying from his previous beliefs, Sukuna lived solely for his own desires and showed no regard for the lives of those he deemed insignificant. His immense strength and expertise in Jujutsu sorcery made him an indomitable force of nature, ultimately earning him the reputation of a natural disaster for the world.
Despite the slim likelihood of this theory being valid in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, it still offers a fascinating character arc for Ryomen Sukuna, whose mysterious origins continue to intrigue fans to this day.
