In a remarkable medical case from Tanzania, doctors have identified a knife blade lodged in the chest cavity of a 44-year-old man, a foreign object he had unknowingly carried for nearly a decade.

The patient sought medical attention after experiencing pus leaking from his nipple, unaware of the underlying issue. Upon conducting a chest X-ray, physicians were surprised to find a 3-inch knife blade embedded in his right chest cavity, located just below the shoulder.

A case study published by the National Library of Medicine details the man’s history, indicating he had suffered a serious injury during a “violent altercation” around eight years prior, which was suspected to be the source of the blade’s injury. Unfortunately, at that time, no radiological examinations were performed on him due to insufficient medical facilities, allowing the wounds to heal without recognizing the knife’s presence.

Successful Surgical Removal of the Knife

Despite carrying the blade for years, the man reported no respiratory issues, fever, or chest pain at the time of his examination, and his vital signs were normal. A CT scan confirmed the knife’s exact location prior to surgery.

The CT imaging indicated the knife’s positioning before removal.

Surrounding dead tissue had contributed to the foul-smelling pus the patient experienced. Fortunately, surgeons successfully extracted the knife without any significant complications, although a defect in his right lung was identified during the procedure.

This case is particularly noteworthy, as it highlights the significant challenges faced in trauma care within resource-limited environments. Medical professionals commented on the rarity of such a situation, where a foreign object of such size remains undetected within the body for an extended period.
