Syncing Passkeys in Microsoft Edge through Windows 11 Password Manager

Microsoft has introduced passkey syncing capabilities in Microsoft Edge 142, available for both Windows 11 and Windows 10. This feature allows users to securely save and sync passkeys via Microsoft Password Manager.
By utilizing biometrics or PINs instead of traditional passwords, this update enhances security and user convenience for logging into supported websites.

Microsoft is enhancing its Microsoft Edge browser by rolling out a new feature that enables the saving and syncing of passkeys across desktop devices running Windows 10 and 11. Initially, this functionality is available for users with Microsoft accounts, although broader compatibility across platforms is anticipated in the near future.

Introducing Passkeys in Microsoft Password Manager

Passkeys represent a cutting-edge and secure alternative to conventional passwords. Unlike traditional text-based passwords, passkeys utilize the FIDO2 open standard, which is grounded in public-key cryptography. Each account produces a unique private key that remains securely stored on the user’s device, while a public key is shared with the corresponding website. This architecture not only makes passkeys resistant to phishing attacks but also protects against password reuse and guessing strategies.

With Microsoft Edge version 142, users can now directly save passkeys in the Microsoft Password Manager and sync them through their Microsoft accounts. When visiting websites equipped to handle passkey logins, users can create passkeys that can be leveraged for secure access using Windows Hello features, such as fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, or a PIN.

Understanding the Syncing Process

Upon generating your initial passkey, Edge will prompt you to establish a Microsoft Password Manager PIN, which serves to encrypt and safeguard your passkeys in the cloud. Additionally, this PIN acts as an authentication layer when accessing passkeys from a new device.

All passkeys are encrypted end-to-end and supported by the Azure Confidential Ledger, establishing a transparent, tamper-proof record of all unlock and reset attempts.

To manage your passkeys, navigate to the Microsoft Edge settings at edge://settings/autofill/passwords/settings. If the PIN is forgotten, it can be reset on any device that already has access to your stored passkeys.

Future Integration Beyond Edge

As confirmed by Microsoft, future updates will allow passkey integration beyond Microsoft Edge, extending to other browsers and applications within Windows 10 and 11 via a dedicated plugin. Currently, passkey syncing is limited to personal Microsoft accounts on Windows, and access on mobile devices or with Microsoft Entra (work or school) accounts is not yet supported.
