Taeil’s Trial Postponed: Former NCT Member Faces Serious Charges

On May 9, Maeil Business Star Today reported that Taeil, the former member of the popular K-pop group NCT, is scheduled to face his first trial regarding serious quasi-rape allegations in June. Originally set for May 12 at the Seoul Central District Court, the hearing has been rescheduled to June 18.

Reason for Delay

While official statements concerning the postponement remain undisclosed, speculation suggests that concerns for security may be a contributing factor. Notably, former South Korean president Yoon Suk-yeol is also scheduled to appear in court on the same day for a separate, high-profile case.

Details of the Indictment

Taeil, whose real name is Moon Tae-il, was officially indicted without detention in March 2025 alongside two accomplices. This indictment falls under Korea’s Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. The accumulation of charges is linked to a distressing incident that took place in June 2024, during which the three individuals are alleged to have assaulted an inebriated woman.

Nature of the Charges

Initial reports hinted at the use of a weapon during the assault. However, law enforcement later clarified that there was no weapon involved, despite the seriousness of the “special quasi-rape”charge. This classification is applied under circumstances where two or more individuals are involved in the assault or when the victim is incapacitated or unconscious.

Public Reaction

  • Just throw him in jail as soon as possible.
  • I saw him out drinking, lol.
  • I was like, “Why are they delaying for someone like this?” — but now that there are speculations it’s because of Yoon Suk-yeol’s trial, it kind of makes sense.
  • Wow… just look at the name of the charge, lololol.
  • Even the reason for the delay is next-level ridiculous, lol.

Legal Proceedings Timeline

Following the victim’s report, police pursued arrest warrants for the three suspects; however, the court denied these requests due to their admission of guilt and low risk of fleeing. Taeil was eventually summoned for questioning in August 2024 and was later transferred to prosecution in September 2024.

Impact on Taeil’s Career

Taeil made his debut in 2016 as part of NCT U and subsequently joined NCT 127. However, the revelation of his involvement in a sexual assault case in August 2024 led to his removal from the group. By October 2024, SM Entertainment confirmed the termination of his exclusive contract.

Looking Ahead

The impending trial is poised to attract considerable public attention and scrutiny as it approaches next month. Stakeholders and fans alike await further developments in this high-profile legal matter.
