Taylor Sheridan’s Plan: The Reason Behind John Dutton’s Death

It has become clear that the demise of John Dutton in the series *Yellowstone* was a predestined event, a narrative consequence of Kevin Costner’s recent departure from the show. With Costner’s announcement in June 2024, many fans faced the harsh reality of losing the iconic patriarch who has driven the story as the head of the Dutton family.

Following speculation regarding a feud between Costner and series creator Taylor Sheridan, viewers were left in shock. However, it appears that the character’s end was preordained within the framework of the show’s storyline.

In a recent interview, Christina Voros, an executive producer of *Yellowstone*, revealed that the finale was intentionally constructed from the very beginning to necessitate a significant change within the Dutton legacy.

The Inevitable Fate of John Dutton

Voros shared insights during her discussion with *The Hollywood Reporter*. She emphasized that the eventual return of the land to the Broken Rock tribe aligns perfectly with the prophecy outlined in *1883*, an integral part of Taylor Sheridan’s vision. “Taylor always knew how this was going to end,” Voros remarked. “Surprisingly, it feels inevitable for those who have followed the story closely.”

Moreover, Voros elaborated on the story’s trajectory, explaining that John Dutton’s death was bound to happen regardless of Costner’s choices. “The conclusion was always planned. The solutions that Kayce finds wouldn’t have been viable had John Dutton remained alive,” she explained. “There was always going to be a moment when he would pass.”

While the timing of John Dutton’s departure may have been influenced by Costner’s exit, Voros asserted that it wouldn’t have altered the overarching narrative structure. “Even if there had been 17 additional seasons featuring Costner, the reality is that the patriarch must eventually pass, allowing the legacy to transition to his children.” As the story evolves, characters like Beth and Rip are set to embark on their journeys, possibly leading to new narratives such as *6666* and other spin-offs.
