Approximately 25, 000 Spectrum customers in Dallas, Texas, recently faced an unexpected internet outage triggered by a stray bullet. Yes, you read that correctly—a bullet!
Experiencing an internet outage due to factors beyond your control can range from a minor inconvenience to a significant disruption, particularly when you’ve diligently taken steps to optimize your WiFi setup. Unfortunately, outages due to external circumstances can cause much frustration, especially when you consider that they can stem from extreme weather conditions, human errors, or, in this unusual case, a gunshot.
Unexpected Internet Disruption in Dallas
The incident on September 26 resulted in a considerable service disruption when a bullet punctured a fiber optic cable, significantly affecting Spectrum’s internet coverage in the area. Residents from Dallas-Fort Worth reported connectivity issues via DownDetector, logging interruptions not only in internet service but also in television, phone service, and the company’s mobile application.
Fortunately, Spectrum acted swiftly to resolve the issue, restoring services within approximately three hours. The company communicated to FOX4 that their team executed the “necessary repairs.” However, they did not disclose the exact location of the damaged cable.
According to TheRegister, this is not the first instance where gunfire has led to an internet outage for Spectrum. Earlier this year, incidents in Ohio also resulted in service interruptions due to shotgun blasts damaging cable lines. Columbus locals faced a similar fate when stray bullets rendered their service inoperative for nearly two days earlier in 2025.
While Dallas residents hope that such incidents remain rare, they are relieved that service was quickly restored this time. As technology continues to evolve, communities must remain vigilant and prepared for unforeseen interruptions.
