The 50 best superhero movies ever made, according to our team of experts

In recent years, Hollywood has been dominated by tales of heroes clad in vibrant outfits fighting against villains. However, one question remains: which superhero films stand out as the greatest of all time?

Similarly to the Westerns of past decades, the superhero genre has been the reigning force at the box office for almost twenty years. The beloved characters from the MCU and DCU, along with the lesser known heroes (such as Spawn), have amassed a large global following, with thousands flocking to theaters every year to witness their favorite comic book icons come to life on the big screen.

Despite this, a small issue has arisen: there is an abundance of movies depicting courageous individuals donning spandex and risking their lives to defeat wicked villains attempting to conquer the world. With so many options, it may be difficult to determine where to begin. However, fret not, as we have taken notice of your plea for assistance and have promptly taken action.

Our team of film aficionados has come together to create an all-inclusive compilation of the greatest superhero movies of all time for your viewing pleasure. Our selection ranges from humorous comedies to thrilling action films, with a touch of drama. So why wait? Are you expecting to be bitten by a radioactive spider? It’s time to dive in!

50. Mystery Men (1999)

The cast of Mystery men
Universal

The premise of the story revolves around a group of local heroes, portrayed by renowned actors such as Ben Stiller, William H Macy, and Janeane Garofalo. In their fight against a powerful supervillain, they unexpectedly rise to fame and manage to avoid any major mistakes.

Our thoughts: During the final years of the 1990s superhero craze, Hollywood was focused on producing more edgy and unconventional films, such as The Mask, Men In Black, and The Crow. As a result, Mystery Men, with its talented cast including Stiller, Macy, Hank Azaria, and the eccentric inventor played by Tom Waits, was unfortunately overshadowed and did not receive the recognition it deserved. It’s a shame because the film is a perfect showcase of the actors’ comedic abilities and could have been a success if released a decade later. Let’s not forget to appreciate Mystery Men and give it the attention it deserves.

Turbo Kid (2015)

The Kid from Turbo Kid
Epic Pictures Group

Synopsis: In a world ravaged by acid rain, Turbo Kid paints a vivid picture of a post-apocalyptic future where ancient weapons and maniacal villains reign supreme. The Kid, a young scavenger, embarks on a heroic quest to save the girl of his dreams and become the savior that the wasteland desperately needs. It’s like Mad Max, but with bicycles instead.

Our opinion: Turbo Kid demonstrates that a successful superhero movie can be made without spending billions of dollars on CGI. It highlights the importance of heart, creativity, and a willingness to have fun while storytelling. This underrated gem pays tribute to genre favorites while also bringing its own distinct energy and identity to the table.

Joker

The Joker dances in a bathroom
Warner Bros.

Summary: Arthur Fleck, a struggling comedian and former clown, gains notoriety after his violent actions lead to riots in Gotham City. Taking on the persona of the Joker, Arthur unintentionally becomes the leader of the rioters and puts on a deadly show that leaves a lasting impact on the citizens of Gotham.

Our thoughts: Upon its initial release, Joker was seen as either controversial and catering to the incel community, or a powerful statement for marginalized individuals. Like the film’s main character, it is open to interpretation. The truth likely lies somewhere in between, but what cannot be denied is the captivating effect it had on audiences, who were mesmerized by its gritty and realistic portrayal of Batman’s infamous foe. A major factor in its success was Phoenix’s electrifying and unhinged performance, which brought a refreshing sense of unease to a character often portrayed as unshakeable. Let’s hope the sequel, Joke 2, doesn’t disappoint fans.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pose with their weapons in Mut6ant Mayhem/
Paramount

Synopsis: The plot revolves around four teenage mutant turtles – Donatello, Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael – who reside in the sewers of New York City with their father, Splinter (a mutated rat). Under his guidance, the turtles learn the art of ninjutsu. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted when a group of mutant criminals offers them the chance to join their cause for mutant liberation. The turtles are faced with a difficult decision: should they remain in the human world that has rejected them or embrace the promise of freedom with their mutant brethren?

Our opinion: This film is both touching and heartwarming, showcasing the importance of family and acceptance. In our opinion, it is not only one of the top animated movies of 2023, but also of all time. The clever and hilarious storyline, along with the unique decision to portray the turtles as teenagers, truly sets this movie apart. While the animation style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, fans of classic Klasky Csupo-style cartoons will surely enjoy this delightful film.

Megamind (2010)

The plot revolves around Megamind, a supervillain who has finally defeated his arch-nemesis Metro Man after a long struggle. However, instead of feeling triumphant, Megamind is left feeling aimless and directionless. To make matters worse, his attempts to control the newly emerged Titan fail, forcing Megamind to dig deep and unleash his own heroic abilities in order to protect his beloved city.

Our opinion: Megamind demonstrates that success can still be achieved, even without originality. While the movie does borrow elements from other sources, it remains a delightful hidden gem that can’t be discounted. Will Ferrell truly shines as the film’s MVP, with his eccentric and lively performance adding to the overall enjoyment of the movie.

The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

Lego Batman and Robin talk.
Warner Animation

Synopsis: Having defeated all the villains in Gotham, Batman now faces his biggest challenge yet – intense loneliness. Luckily, Bruce will have the help of the eager orphan, Dick Grayson, by his side. This is especially important as the Joker is assembling a team of interdimensional criminals to conquer Gotham.

Our impression: Despite its appearance as a children’s toy box come to life, LEGO Batman offers a surprisingly mature exploration of the Dark Knight’s tendency towards isolation and his complicated dynamic with the Joker. In fact, it may be one of the most faithful adaptations of their unusual relationship from the comic books. Additionally, the film is genuinely hilarious, with Will Arnett delivering a noteworthy performance as Batman, possibly ranking him just behind Val Kilmer as one of the most underrated actors to portray the Caped Crusader on screen.

Batman Mask of the Phantasm (1993)

Batman leaps from a building in Mask of the Phantasm.
Warner Animation

Synopsis: As a new deadly vigilante, the Phantasm, emerges in Gotham, Batman begins to delve into the situation. However, when his ex-fiance, Andrea Beaumont, unexpectedly resurfaces, the Caped Crusader is forced to confront his dedication to his solitary crusade against crime.

Our opinion: Mask of the Phantasm is a beautifully animated film that delves into the depths of Batman’s troubled psyche. Although it eventually leads to an exciting showdown between Batman and Phantasm (with a touch of Joker for good measure), the film truly shines when it delves into the character’s origins and motivations for becoming the Dark Knight.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

The Teen Titans look at Deathstroke dismissively
Warner Animation

About: The Teen Titans head to Hollywood to make their dream of starring in a blockbuster movie come true. However, they become annoyed when they realize they haven’t had their own film yet. While on their journey, they uncover a sinister truth about the film industry.

Our opinion: In true Teen Titans Go! fashion, this high-energy movie playfully mocks the overused cliches and tropes found in superhero films. However, the highlight of the film is undoubtedly Robin’s performance of “My Superhero Movie,”a catchy tune that also introduces his iconic catchphrase, “Crack an egg on it, ca-caw!”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

The Guadians of the Galaxy Vol 2 poster featuring Star Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, Nebula, and Drax
Marvel Studios

Summary: In the sequel to the first Guardians movie, the main characters are faced with the task of dealing with Peter Quill’s estranged father, Ego. What starts off as a potentially heartwarming reunion quickly turns dangerous when Gamora uncovers Ego’s nefarious plans for both his son and the entire universe.

Our opinion: James Gunn continues to deliver quality films and while this may be the least strong installment in the Guardians franchise, it still ranks highly among the rest of the MCU movies. As with all of Gunn’s projects, there is a delightful charm and imaginative visuals that make the film captivating. Kurt Russell also adds an interesting dynamic as the unfeeling living planet, serving as a striking contrast to the lovable Guardians. However, the standout moment of the film is undeniably Yondu’s emotional sacrifice, which will be the lasting memory for viewers. He truly was Mary Poppin’s to all of us.

Superman 2 (1980)

Superman crushes Zod's hand
Warner Bros.

Synopsis: The sequel to Superman finds the notorious General Zod and his gang of criminals escaping from the Phantom Zone and setting their sights on conquering Earth. Despite the clear need for Superman’s intervention, the hero is preoccupied with personal matters as Lois Lane finally discovers his true identity as Clark Kent.

Our perspective: Just as the first Superman inspired us to believe in the power of flight, Superman 2 showed us how to love the iconic superhero. Despite the serious threat posed by Zod, the film has a lighter tone compared to its predecessor and successfully blends elements of a romantic comedy with a superhero plot. This unique mix of tones could easily feel disjointed, but the talented cast of Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp, and Margot Kidder skillfully navigate the balance. Although we still can’t figure out what that cellophane S was that Clark threw at Zod’s henchman. It will forever remain a mystery.

Deadpool (2016)

Deadpool looks shocked while Colossus looks disapproving.
20th Century Studios

Synopsis: After mercenary Wade Wilson undergoes an experimental medical treatment to cure his cancer, he is left disfigured but gains an extraordinary healing ability. Unable to face his former love with his new appearance, Wade transforms into the vengeful Deadpool, determined to track down the individual responsible for his disfigurement and demand that he fix it by any means necessary.

Our Opinion: Intentionally immature and charmingly silly, Deadpool is an incredibly enjoyable superhero adventure that is not suitable for all ages, much like a visit to the adult section of a video store. However, setting aside its violence and profanity, this is the perfect role for Ryan Reynolds, as he effortlessly embodies the zany antics and rebellious attitude that Wade is known for in the comic books. While the movie may lack depth, it’s hard to complain when it’s this entertaining.

Batman Begins (2005)

Batman looks on moodily
Warner Bros.

Summary: Bruce Wayne is determined to rid Gotham City of crime and seeks training from the infamous League of Shadows. However, he becomes disturbed by their brutal tactics and ultimately turns against them. Returning to his home, Bruce fully embraces his alter ego, Batman, but the League has their own agenda for Gotham and will stop at nothing to achieve it, even if it means going up against the city’s new vigilante.

Our perspective: Amidst the renowned Batman trilogy by Nolan, Batman Begins often goes unnoticed despite its efforts to reveal the humanity of the legendary hero. While it includes exciting training montages and an impressive fight scene on an elevated train, the film also succeeds in giving Gotham a distinct personality, something that Dark Knight or Rises fails to accomplish by merely renaming Chicago.

Dredd (2012)

Judge Dredd grimaces as he points his gun.
Lionsgate

In a post-apocalyptic setting, Mega City One is overrun by crime and chaos. To combat this, the police force has been granted the authority of judge, jury, and executioner. Our protagonists, Judge Dredd and his rookie partner Judge Anderson, embark on a dangerous mission to arrest a powerful drug lord who will stop at nothing to maintain their control over the city. The task at hand: make it to the top of a 200-story skyscraper and bring the criminal to justice, facing numerous obstacles and adversaries along the way.

Our opinion: Dredd is a remarkable action film that shares similar qualities with The Raid, although it may not quite match up to its excellence. The movie takes pleasure in depicting violence and brutal scenes, much like its source material. However, there is also a clever satirical element that sets it apart from other dark comic adaptations. Karl Urban brilliantly portrays the judge, delivering his witty one-liners with a cleverness that contrasts with Dredd’s reserved demeanor. And let’s not forget to appreciate the fact that he kept his helmet on throughout the movie – a subtle jab at Stallone, perhaps?

V For Vendetta

A man in a Guy Fakes Mask know as V stares ominously at a police man.
Warner Bros.

Plot Summary: Taking place in a dystopian Britain ruled by a fascist government, the story follows the journey of Evey Hammond, a young woman who is saved from government enforcers by a mysterious figure known only as V. As V plans to overthrow the oppressive regime, Evey is faced with the dilemma of determining whether her rescuer is a hero fighting for freedom or a potentially dangerous terrorist.

Although the movie version of V for Vendetta may not capture the same level of moral complexity as Alan Moore’s source material, it is still a gripping and enjoyable action-packed thriller. There is a satisfying sense of justice in watching a superpowered Guy Fawkes take down a fascist regime, and the climax is undeniably one of the most thrilling in the superhero genre.

However, Deku is falsely accused of terrorism and must rely on the help of Shoto and Dynamight, who assist from a distance. Together, they are joined by a new ally, Rody Soul.

It would be difficult to find a superhero franchise that exudes more joy and inspiration than My Hero Academia. It captures the essence of Superman’s love for planet Earth and builds an entire narrative around it. The show continues to be consistently fulfilling, and this vibrant, action-packed movie is no exception.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021)

Warner Bros

The premise of the story centers on the aftermath of Superman’s death in Batman v Superman, which leaves Earth exposed to danger. With a menacing threat approaching, Batman assembles a team of metahumans, including Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg, to protect against the impending invasion led by the tyrant Darkseid and his second-in-command, Steppenwolf.

Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League remains faithful to the essence of its heroes and captures the captivating allure of DC comics’ mythology. With its stirring, highly stylized visuals and deliberate use of slow motion, it presents an unfiltered, imperfect, and substantial interpretation that surpasses the 2017 release and transcends into the depths of Apokolips.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Professor X, Beast, and Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past
20th Century Studios

Summary: Set in a dystopian future, the X-Men are on the brink of extinction as they are relentlessly pursued by Sentinels. To alter their fate, the remaining X-Men and Magneto devise a desperate plan to send Wolverine back in time to the 1970s. In this era, he must bring together the younger versions of Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr to prevent the catastrophic events that lead to the creation of the Sentinel program.

Our perspective: Days of Future Past is the ultimate culmination of years of established lore within the X-Men universe, bringing together past and future by allowing both the 2000s X-Men and the new cast to interact. The stakes in the dystopian future are incredibly intense, resulting in heart-wrenching deaths for beloved characters and impressive demonstrations of power, while the past storyline remains cohesive despite the complexity of time-travel. This film is filled with meaningful themes that are essential to any X-Men story, achieving a perfect blend of enjoyable fan service and innovative adaptation.

Watchmen (2009)

Dr Manhattan from Watchmen
Warner Bros

About the story: In Watchmen, a series of murders targeting superheroes has left the Watchmen team in dire need of reinforcements. Rorschach and Night-Owl, despite their conflicting approaches, join forces to uncover the identity of the killer. This adaptation of Alan Moore’s renowned graphic novel is a brutal and intense journey that exposes the dark and dangerous underbelly of society, from the streets to the war-torn landscapes of Vietnam, and ultimately to the brink of a catastrophic global disaster.

Zack Snyder successfully transformed an unadaptable graphic novel into a visually stunning, thematically complex, and highly enjoyable superhero film. Watchmen is a remarkable achievement, from its dynamic opening credits to the emergence of Dr Manhattan and the shocking reveal of the true antagonist. It serves as a prime example of expertly crafted storytelling on a grand scale.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Synopsis: Following his rejection from the army, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) undergoes a secret experiment that transforms him into a super-soldier dedicated to fighting against the Nazis. While serving as a symbol of American strength during World War II, Captain Rogers uncovers the presence of a powerful extraterrestrial entity.

Our perspective: With the increasingly convoluted timeline of Marvel movies, it is easy to overlook the origins of the MCU. However, Captain America’s origin story remains one of the most impactful in the entire franchise, showcasing a well-developed character and a satisfying conclusion. The period setting and introduction of important supporting characters make this a crucial addition to any superhero marathon. Ultimately, Steve Rogers embodies the true essence of a hero – a vessel for justice and humanity.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

Miles Morales stares at his hands in Across the Spider-Verse.
Sony Animation

Summary: Miles has fully embraced his role as the ultimate Spider-Man after the events of Into the Spider-Verse, but he still longs for his friends. When he is given the chance to join forces with Spider-Gwen and the rest of his buddies to fight the notorious Spot, Miles eagerly accepts. However, he soon discovers that there was a specific reason why the Spider-Society had not reached out to him before.

Our opinion is that Across the Spider-Verse is a delightful experience from start to finish, bursting with energy and creativity. Although the plot may not be as tightly woven as the first film, it does not disappoint in its portrayal of the Spider-Verse, transporting us to various unique worlds that are visually stunning. However, the film manages to strike a balance between style and substance.

The movie centers around a thought-provoking ethical dilemma, and the antagonist, portrayed by Oscar Isaac, is as intricate as an unsolved Rubik’s Cube. If other superhero films were as inventive as the Spider-Verse movies, there wouldn’t be a discussion about superhero fatigue. The release date for Beyond the Spider-Verse is unknown, but we are eagerly anticipating the conclusion of Miles’s journey.

Our opinion: Return of the Joker is an incredibly entertaining and chilling movie, showcasing Bruce’s unsettling choice to involve children in his fight against crime. It manages to strike a balance between grim and gritty, and delightfully camp and darkly comical, with Mark Hamill’s exceptional portrayal of the Joker. Despite being highly underrated, this film stands out as one of the best among the Batman franchise.

Our opinion: James Gunn has consistently demonstrated his understanding of what audiences desire in superhero films, and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is no different. It strikes a perfect balance between darkness and humor, and offers a visually stunning experience. Despite its otherworldly setting, the film’s emotional impact is incredibly moving. It has received praise from even the toughest critics, including PETA. To read our complete review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, click here.

Batman (1989)

Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne in Batman 89
Warner Bros.

Synopsis: The story follows billionaire Bruce Wayne, who is tormented by his childhood trauma of witnessing his parents’ murder. Fueled by his desire to protect Gotham from crime, he takes on the persona of Batman. As a new threat, The Joker, rises in the city and takes control of the criminal world, Batman must stop him while also protecting his love interest, Vicki Vale.

It is widely believed that Batman is a timeless classic that revolutionized the superhero genre. Tim Burton’s portrayal of Gotham and Michael Keaton’s masterful depiction of Bruce’s inner struggles were a perfect match. Jack Nicholson’s performance as the Joker struck the perfect balance between menace and charm, solidifying his place as one of the greatest actors to take on the role. Batman remains a crucial figure in the world of superheroes, loved by both dedicated fans and newer generations alike.

Synopsis: Three friends discover a mysterious hole in the ground and gain extraordinary telekinetic abilities. Initially, their newfound powers seem like a dream come true, but the situation takes a dark turn when one of the friends starts using his powers to seek revenge on a society that has mistreated him.

Our opinion: Chronicle serves as undeniable evidence that a huge budget is not necessary to create a successful superhero movie. This clever found footage film prioritizes its endearing main characters over flashy action scenes, making it easy to sympathize with them, even when one of them is using telekinetic powers to extract fillings from their bully’s teeth.

Synopsis: In 1944, the Nazis summoned Hellboy, but after their defeat, he was taken in by the Allies. Now, decades later, he works as a supernatural detective for the BPRD. When Rasputin is resurrected and threatens to conquer the world, Hellboy must stop him.

Our opinion: It was inevitable that Guillermo del Toro’s interpretation of Mike Mignola’s dark and quirky style would be a perfect fit. Adding Ron Perlman as the witty and iconic demon only adds to the brilliance of the film. The constantly intensifying plot will draw you in, but it’s del Toro’s masterful use of practical effects that will keep you hooked.

He captures Professor X and his powerful mutant-tracking machine, Cerebro. As mutants face the threat of extinction, the remaining X-Men must join forces with Magento and his brotherhood of evil mutants in order to stop Stryker and save their kind.

Our opinion: X2 is a remarkable action film and a thought-provoking exploration of the struggles faced by outsiders in a prejudiced society. It is undoubtedly the best X-Men movie, making all other X-Men movies envious. However, the main reason for including it on this list is for its exhilarating opening sequence, where Nightcrawler teleports his way through the White House, effortlessly taking down Secret Service agents. It is a scene that leaves a lasting impression.

18. Unbreakable (2000)

Bruce Willis in Unbreakable
Universal

Synopsis: The protagonist, David Dunn (Bruce Willis), is the lone survivor of a train accident. This prompts the question of whether it was mere chance or something beyond explanation. According to Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson), a cane-wielding comic book fanatic, Dunn may possess extraordinary strength and invincibility. However, as the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility, and the cost of having superhuman abilities in the real world is a heavy burden to bear.

Our opinion: Unbreakable is not only M. Night Shyamalan’s most remarkable film, but also a subtle yet stunning take on the superhero genre that challenges its conventional elements at the cusp of its significant impact on popular culture. The performances by Willis and Jackson are captivating and imbued with emotional depth, while every frame captured by Eduardo Serra’s cinematography is evocative of a photograph. James Newton Howard’s haunting theme only adds to the film’s enduring legacy, as reflected in its title.

Wonder Woman (2017)

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman draws her sword in Wonder Woman.
Warner Bros.

About the movie: This film serves as a prequel to the events of Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. It follows Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), the Princess of the Amazons, as she embarks on a journey from Themyscira to confront the malevolent God of War (not the one you’re thinking of), Ares. The catalyst for her mission is the arrival of American pilot and spy, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who washes up on the shores of her island and reveals that the world is engulfed in war.

Our opinion: In contrast to the dark and gritty tone of other DC films, Wonder Woman presents a heartwarming tale of empathy and compassion amidst the chaos of war. Gal Gadot truly embodies the character, balancing Wonder Woman’s warrior nature with a deep sense of empathy inherited from her Amazonian roots. However, the film is perhaps most notable for its iconic No Man’s Land scene, which left me in awe upon first viewing.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

The Guardians escape from prison in Guardian of the Galaxy
Marvel Studios

Topic: Guardians of the Galaxy revolves around the formation of the most diverse and comedic team in the MCU. The team consists of Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, who represents the human element; Groot, a walking (and somewhat talking) tree; Rocket, a skilled raccoon with sharpshooting abilities; Gamora, a lethal alien assassin; and Drax, a powerful and muscular destroyer.

At first, they have a strong dislike for each other, a common occurrence in comic book team-ups. However, a prison escape compels them to work together and the Guardians soon discover they make a formidable team, especially when facing off against the fanatical Kree antagonist, Ronan the Accuser.

Our impression: After my visit to the Guardians of the Galaxy set, it was clear that writer-director James Gunn had a well-defined and distinct vision for the movie. While some elements may have seemed confusing, it was evident that this vision had the potential to take the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a unique direction or result in utter chaos.

Despite the forgettable villain Ronan, Guardians was a resounding success, filled with multi-dimensional characters, ingenious action sequences, and a rocking soundtrack thanks to Pete’s Awesome Mix-Tape. It also contained the best jokes in any superhero movie at the time, making it a relentlessly entertaining film that was full of heart and soul. Thankfully, the end result was nothing short of a triumph.

15. The Avengers (2012)

Thor and Black Widow in The Avengers
Marvel Studios

The plot centers around Earth being in grave danger as Thor’s brother Loki leads an extraterrestrial attack. In order to combat this threat, Nick Fury brings together a group of remarkable individuals including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. As the survival of the planet hangs in the balance, they must unite and utilize their unique abilities to become the most powerful defenders of Earth.

Our opinion: The Avengers was created during a time when Marvel films were not solely reliant on blue screens, and this is evident in the movie. It possesses a delightful, flexible quality, a sense of touch, and an exhilarating sparkle that would ultimately revolutionize modern Hollywood. With clever humor, well-developed characters, and just the right amount of cheese, The Avengers not only holds up against the massive ensemble films that came after it; it remains one of the top contenders.

14. The Batman (2022)

Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne in The Batman
Warner Bros

Plot Summary: When the Riddler begins a string of gruesome and violent murders in Gotham City, Bruce Wayne is forced to confront his family’s history and struggle to balance his public image with his secret identity as the masked vigilante.

Our opinion: We’re excited for a Riddler reminiscent of the Zodiac Killer and an emo, makeup-wearing Bruce Wayne played by Robert Pattinson. The story of Batman has been told countless times, but Matt Reeves’ gritty and dark portrayal of Gotham is the most original take on the Caped Crusader yet. And even if you’re not a fan of Pattinson’s brooding Bruce, Colin Farrell’s unrecognizable performance as The Penguin is reason enough to watch. Let’s just hope The Batman 2 can live up to the high standards set by its predecessor.

13. Logan (2017)

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in Logan
20th Century Studios

About the film: Set in the near future, the film follows a tired Logan as he looks after a sick Professor X in a secluded hideout near the Mexican border. However, his efforts to distance himself from the world and his past are disrupted when a young mutant, who is being pursued, shows up. Reluctantly, Logan embarks on a journey with Charles and the girl, forcing him to confront his inner struggles.

Our thoughts: Logan is a touching tribute to a character that holds a special place in many of our hearts. Through James Mangold’s direction, we see a more raw and human side of the mutant as he strips away the familiar healing factor, claws, and tough exterior to reveal a deep well of history and optimism. The film’s intense R-rated action, focused storytelling, and poignant farewell make it one of the top superhero movies of the 2010s. We can only hope that Deadpool 3 will live up to the standard set by this exceptional film.

12. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Marvel Studios

Plot summary: In an effort to “balance the universe,”Thanos plans to use the Infinity Stones to erase half of all life. The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy join forces to prevent this catastrophic event and save the world, whether it be on Earth or in the far reaches of outer space.

In our opinion: Infinity War marks the pinnacle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a thrilling and fast-paced conclusion to ten years of superhero tales and an unforgettable introduction to Thanos, the ultimate villain. While Endgame may have mended our broken hearts, that was the simple part; its devastating and brilliant finale forced us to confront the unimaginable. While some may have moved on, we are still deeply affected.

Black Panther (2018)

Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa in Black Panther (2018)
Marvel Studios

After years of seclusion, King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) grapples with the position of his kingdom in the global community as he assumes the throne. However, his reign is challenged by the arrival of Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), a dangerous adversary with his own agenda for Wakanda.

Our perspective: Although it is undeniably a groundbreaking film, Black Panther remains first and foremost an exhilarating and captivating action movie that will elicit cheers of joy from even the most skeptical superhero movie enthusiasts. Director Ryan Coogler expertly brings the nation of Wakanda to life, crafting an Afro-futuristic utopia that has never been seen in the Marvel universe before.

Despite the exceptional production design, casting, and music, the true reason for its inclusion on this list is the dynamic duo at its core, Boseman and Jordan. Their performances as two men who should have been like brothers, but are instead divided by outdated beliefs and animosity, are truly remarkable. Boseman, in particular, delivers a stunning portrayal of a dignified and magnetic king.

In this role, he is constantly saving lives and facing off against his arch-nemesis, the notorious criminal mastermind Lex Luthor, all while donning his iconic red and blue spandex suit.

The comic book films and shows that preceded Superman were often seen as low-budget, childish productions. However, everything changed with Richard Donner’s film. Its tagline, “You’ll believe a man can fly,”was fitting as Donner utilized advanced special effects to bring the iconic character to life. Yet, the true standout of the film was the casting of Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent. His effortless ability to switch between the endearing bumbler and confident hero in an instant made him the perfect choice for the dual role.

Despite its slower pace, which may seem outdated in comparison to today’s fast-paced blockbusters, this allows for the characters to have room to develop and for relationships to be established. As a result, when Pa Kent passes away or Clark falls in love with Lois, the audience truly believes in the events unfolding onscreen. This adds a sense of depth and emotional impact to the film, solidifying its place as the first mature superhero movie and one that still stands as one of the greatest. We can only hope that James Gunn’s version of Superman will live up to the standard set by Donner.

Crow, The (1994)

Brandon Lee in The Crow.
Dimension Films

Synopsis: On the ominous night of Devil’s Night, a group of criminals brutally kill Eric Draven and his beloved fiancée. One year later, Eric is miraculously brought back to life with an array of extraordinary powers and is granted only one evening to seek retribution against his assailants.

Our perspective: The Crow stands out among other movies on this list as it diverges from the typical definition of a “superhero”film. It does not rely on capes, flashy abilities, or a supporting team – instead, it delivers cathartic and visually striking violence. This film deserves recognition for its brooding atmosphere and stunning camerawork, which effectively capture the gothic essence of the original comic book. Above all, The Crow delves into the core of what makes a superhero – a person motivated by vengeance and a determination to bring about change in the world.

8. Spider-Man

Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man (2002)
Sony Pictures

Summary: After being bitten by a radioactive spider on a school trip, Peter Parker gains extraordinary powers and becomes the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. However, balancing his personal life, relationships, and fighting against the Green Goblin proves to be a challenging task, and Peter realizes the weight of responsibility that comes with his abilities.

Our opinion: Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was the catalyst for the superhero genre’s popularity. By showcasing a teenage hero with flair, Raimi captured the attention of mainstream audiences and forever solidified their love for superheroes. Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of the Green Goblin remains iconic, and the epic showdown in New York set a new standard for all future superhero films.

Seventh Movie in the Batman Franchise (1992)

The Penguin and Catwoman share a moment in Batman Returns
Warner Bros

The city of Gotham is in danger once again as the Penguin teams up with industrialist Max Shreck to pose a challenge to Batman, making it more difficult for him to fulfill his duty of safeguarding the city. As the situation escalates, Catwoman makes her presence known with her own motives.

Our opinion: For my initial experience with the world of Batman, nothing ignites my nostalgia quite like Tim Burton’s interpretation of Gotham. The exaggerated sets and gothic elements create a distinct personality for the city itself. This, combined with an exceptional cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken, and Michael Keaton, solidifies Batman Returns as my top choice (in some ways, even above The Dark Knight – please don’t criticize).

The Avengers walk through portals in Endgame
Marvel Studios

Synopsis: Continuing from the events of Infinity War, the remaining Avengers undertake a journey through time to reverse the catastrophic consequences of Thanos’ snap and bring back harmony to the universe. Along their quest, they confront both individual and cosmic obstacles.

Despite the difficulty of bringing together over a decade’s worth of successful storytelling, the Russo brothers exceeded our expectations with Avengers: Endgame. This film not only showcases immense scale and emotional depth, but also leaves a profound impact on the art of cinematic storytelling. Its influence is so significant that it has ushered in a new era in the superhero genre, often referred to as the “post-Endgame era.”

5. Movie Review: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Peter B Parker and Miles Morales swing in Spider-Man: Into the Sppider-Verse
Sony Animation

Synopsis: Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is an ordinary teenager residing in New York City until an unexpected encounter with a radioactive spider grants him extraordinary abilities, turning him into the ultimate Spider-Man. As he learns to control his newfound powers, Miles joins forces with a group of Spider-People from different dimensions, aiding them in their quest to return to their respective homes.

Our opinion: Into the Spider-Verse is a vibrant and dazzling film that deserves recognition as one of the most imaginative Spider-Man movies of the past decade. It seamlessly blends a complex storyline about the boundless possibilities of reality with a touching coming-of-age narrative. While its stunning visuals and mind-bending multiverse set it apart from other live-action adaptations, it’s the quieter, more character-focused scenes that truly showcase the depth and substance of Spider-Verse.

The Incredibles (2004)

Mr Incredible from the Increidbles
Pixar

A powerful couple decides to leave their life of fighting crime in order to focus on raising their family. However, Mister Incredible’s desire to continue his heroic duties leads him back into the dangerous world when a crazed fan transforms into a supervillain. The Incredibles marked the beginning of a successful partnership between Disney and Pixar and remains a standout film in both animation and the superhero genre.

Our opinion: The Incredibles is essentially a superior adaptation of the Fantastic Four, a story that Marvel has been attempting to bring to life on the silver screen for quite some time. This film boasts delightful animation, well-developed characters, and an engaging plot, all enhanced by thrilling action sequences and clever humor that appeals to both young and old viewers.

3. Kick-Ass (2010)

Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl in the Kick-Ass movie
Universal

Synopsis: Dave Lizewski, a normal teenager from New York, makes the bold decision to become a superhero. Donning a self-made costume made from a scuba suit, Dave takes to the streets but quickly gets beaten up. However, after replacing his broken bones with metal, Dave becomes a successful crime fighter. Under the alias Kick-Ass, he teams up with the formidable duo of Big Daddy and Hit-Girl to take down Frank D’Amico, a notorious local crime boss. Their efforts intensify as they join forces to bring justice to the city.

Our impression: Kick-Ass, directed by Matthew Vaughn, successfully captures the subversive essence of Mark Millar’s comic book. It serves as both an endearing parody of the genre and an incredibly enjoyable superhero film. Aaron Taylor-Johnson shines as the charming protagonist, while Nicolas Cage delivers an outstanding and emotional performance as Big Daddy.

The most impressive character, however, is Hit-Girl played by Chloe Grace Moretz. Despite being a child, she speaks and kills in ways that one wouldn’t expect, yet she is the standout of the film and is featured in the most memorable scenes.

2. The Dark Knight (2008)

Heath Ledger as the Joker in the Dark Knight
Warner Bros.

As the Joker (Heath Ledger) causes destruction and chaos, Batman (Christian Bale) strives to put an end to his actions. However, the arrival of Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) as the powerful DA of Gotham raises doubts in Batman’s mind about what type of hero the city truly needs and deserves in this moment.

Our opinion: The Dark Knight stands out as one of the greatest movies of the 21st century, and it could easily be considered the most iconic. Christopher Nolan took a risk by offering viewers a superior type of superhero film, and its captivating and exhilarating impact still remains unmatched (even with its sequel). Furthermore, it features the most outstanding performance of all time by Heath Ledger, who delivers a once-in-a-generation portrayal of the Joker.

1. Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Alfred Molina as Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2
Sony Pictures

Synopsis: Set two years after the events of Spider-Man (2002), Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is facing challenges as he tries to balance his personal life with his superhero duties. However, when a lab accident turns Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) into the villainous Doc Ock, Peter must make a difficult decision between his identity as Spider-Man and his life as Peter Parker.

Our opinion: Spider-Man 2 is a tribute to the over-the-top and dramatic stories of the silver age created by Lee and Ditko. It showcases the same agility as its main character, effortlessly shifting between thrilling action and heart-wrenching drama, reminiscent of a genetically enhanced spider.

All aspects of Spider-Man 2 are flawless, from Molina’s excellent casting to Raimi’s masterful and stylish direction. The iconic music by Danny Elfman adds a joyfully upbeat element to the film. While I admire every aspect of the movie, the standout scene is undeniably the showdown on the elevated train, which brilliantly showcases the unique abilities of Otto and Peter.

Available for streaming on: Disney+ and Peacock.
