The Apothecary Diaries Manga Artist Sentenced to Prison for “Malicious” Tax Evasion

Erika Ikeda, the artist behind The Apothecary Diaries manga, has been given a 10-month prison sentence for committing extensive tax evasion.

Having made its debut in 2017, its popularity skyrocketed with the release of an anime series in 2023.

Despite the success of the anime show, the manga’s sales have also seen an increase. Nevertheless, the series is currently embroiled in controversy due to legal complications.

Erika Ikeda, who uses the pen name Neko Kurage, was declared guilty of evading approximately 47 million yen in taxes by the Fukuoka District Court on July 24. The illustrator was sentenced to 10 months in prison, with a three-year suspension and a fine of 11 million yen for violating the Income Tax Act.

According to a report by Livedoor, the ruling states that Ikeda earned a total of approximately 260 million yen over the span of three years (2019-2021) from her job as the illustrator for The Apothecary Diaries and from royalties received from other publishers. However, they failed to accurately report their income and did not file their tax returns on time.

According to Judge Yuko Takeda, Ikeda had engaged in significant tax evasion over the course of several years, which was deemed extremely malicious. The judge also noted that despite The Apothecary Diaries’ increasing popularity and income, Ikeda chose to prioritize their work and personal life over fulfilling their tax obligations.

Ikeda has been an active manga artist for several years. Prior to The Apothecary Diaries, they had already published another historical comedy manga called Soushoku-kei Danshi, where they served as both the author and illustrator.

Despite the three-year suspension and potential jail time, The Apothecary Diaries may still attract a new artist for the manga, especially since the overall reception has been positive. The success of the first season has already led to the confirmation of a second season in 2025.
