Ellie’s iconic tattoo design from The Last of Us has recently received criticism from fans who claim it looks “cheap”, as new leaked photos from season 2 have surfaced.
Currently in production, The Last of Us season 2 has fans highly anticipating the continuation of the popular series. While the first season primarily covered the events of the initial game, the upcoming season will center on Bella Ramsey’s Ellie and follow the story of The Last of Us Part II.
In light of this change in perspective, fans have been extremely critical of Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie, with several pointing out on social media that she “appears”too young to play the character following the significant time leap between the first and second seasons of the show.
Despite the lack of official releases, leaked set photos have already started appearing online. Among these leaked images, the ones that have gained the most attention are those featuring Ellie’s tattoo.

In The Last of Us Part II, Ellie attempts to conceal her bite mark initially with a chemical burn and later, by enlisting her ex-girlfriend Cat to tattoo over the area.
The design has become so closely associated with the character that many fans of the franchise have even gone as far as getting tattoos of it as a tribute to Ellie and the series.
Undoubtedly, the internet is filled with various opinions regarding HBO’s approach to bringing Ellie’s tattoo to life in Season 2, with some going as far as describing the design as “inexpensive.”
Additionally, some have commented that HBO failed to accurately depict the tattoo and that it resembles an “Ellie cosplay.”
Despite the general consensus among fans that the tattoo design is not what they expected, many have also acknowledged that this does not accurately represent Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie.
Another X user expressed their opinion, stating that while they understood certain criticisms, they did not understand the hate towards the actor portraying Ellie. They believed that Bella was doing a fantastic job in the role and that attacking her appearance was not justified, as perfection should not be expected.
The release date for Season 2 of The Last of Us is expected to be sometime in 2025, although an exact date has not been officially confirmed yet.
