The highly anticipated premiere of From Season 3 has arrived, with Episode 1 diving deep into the horror genre. Once again, Jim (Eion Bailey) is found making some questionable choices.
Before we continue, be warned: spoilers ahead!
From Season 3 Episode 1 picks up right after the Season 2 finale; winter is approaching, the town’s food supply is running low, and Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno) is indeed in the real world.
Jim, concerned that their children Julie (Hannah Cheramy) and Ethan (Simon Webster) may be left without their mother, decides the best course of action is to search for her in the woods.
However, the residents of Fromville know that this course of action is at best unwise and at worst a death wish. Despite Boyd (Harold Perrineau) strongly advising against it, Jim is resolute, and Kenny (Ricky He) opts to accompany him for safety.
Upon encountering eerie log cabins adorned with creepy, skeleton-like effigies, Jim has a change of heart. While they spend the night with a Talisman secured on the door, he informs Kenny that they will set out in the morning.
This would seem reasonable, were it not for the grim reality that back in Fromville, both Boyd and Kenny’s mother, Tian-Chen (Elizabeth Moy), have been abducted by the Cowboy Creature and the sinister smiling monsters.
In the chilling final moments of From Season 3 Episode 1, they torment Boyd by inflicting anguish on Tian-Chen right before his eyes. While her fate remains uncertain, Jim’s reckless decision to venture into the forest means that Kenny is not there to support his mother.
If Kenny had remained at home, he might have assisted Boyd instead of leaving Tian-Chen to suffer alone. If she perishes, it will leave Kenny with no chance to say farewell.

This moment has sparked frustration among From fans, as many express their exasperation with Jim, who has a track record of making perplexing choices. Following the Season 3 premiere, one viewer took to Reddit, stating, “He’s the most irritating character in this whole show.”
“How could he go into the woods and then change his mind in the middle of the night? It took him that long to realize? He’s such a fool and never thinks things through. He drives me absolutely insane.”
Another fan pointed out, “I think they just needed a reason for Kenny to be occupied,” while a third remarked, “Just an excuse for Kenny not to be there when his mom dies…”
A fourth added, “Omg, I 100000% agree! I was yelling at him the entire time from my couch. He never thinks things through and makes everything worse than it was. I feel so bad for Kenny and wish he had let Jim go into the woods by himself.”
On the other hand, some fans came to Jim’s defense. “I understand the feeling of needing to find your significant other, even at personal risk. I’ve faced a somewhat similar situation (though not nearly as dangerous),” noted one supporter.
“The adrenaline compels you to take action, and once it fades, clarity returns, leading to questioning impulsive decisions.”
Kenny and Jim venture into the woods
“I might be in the minority, but this was the most relatable decision-making process I’ve witnessed on the show. In his position, I found myself behaving similarly.”
Nonetheless, they suggested that “this was likely a plot device used to get both characters out of town for the night.”
“With them gone, Kenny loses his mom, and Ethan (who poses the real danger in this episode) opens the door for Randall’s budding redemption arc. Furthermore, it introduces a new element with the mysterious cabins and creepy stick dolls.”
“I suspect that these two will continue exploring the woods and uncovering more horrors in the coming episodes, and this was a convenient way to set that in motion.”
From Season 3 Episode 1 is currently streaming on MGM+, and Episode 2 will be available on Sunday, September 29.
