The Surprising Explanation for the Herobrine Reference in the Minecraft Movie

A recently released Minecraft Movie has included a subtle homage to the notorious Herobrine urban legend. Interestingly, the movie’s producer has indicated that this reference was not entirely intentional.

Among the most chilling and well-known creepypastas inspired by video games, characters like Ben Drowned, MARIO, and Sonic.exe stand out. Yet, the myth of Herobrine remains one of the most iconic tales in gaming folklore. It first emerged in 2010 when a player recounted an encounter with a version of Steve—voiced by Jack Black in the film—who had eerily glowing white eyes.

As news of this phenomenon spread among the gaming community, reports of Herobrine sightings increased. Players claimed to have spotted him fleetingly, often in the peripheral, fleeting moments as they explored Minecraft’s vast environments.

In the film, there is a scene where an Enderman puts Steve into a trance, causing Steve’s eyes to glow white as he murmurs ominous phrases. While this moment could be perceived as a nod to Herobrine, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, the creative director at Mojang Studios, clarified the situation on social media.

He explained, “It’s super strange that all of their eyes were supposed to be purple but when it was rendered, one of the characters’ eyes kept coming out white in the final renders, so we wound up keeping it like that because the VFX studio ran out of time, ” as he noted on X/Twitter.

The Herobrine saga continued with a creepypasta that claimed he was the ghost of Notch’s deceased brother. However, Notch himself debunked this myth in 2010, tweeting, “Herobrine isn’t real in any way, no. I never had a brother (well, there’s a half-brother I never met…), and he’s not in the game.”

Interestingly, in a lighthearted touch, patch notes released in May 2011 hinted at the removal of Herobrine from the game. This has fueled ongoing speculation—perhaps the creature is still lurking somewhere within Minecraft?

As excitement continues to build around the Minecraft Movie, stay updated on where you can stream it and the box office performance it needs to achieve.
