What could be better than Yellowstone or Virgin River? Perhaps the union of the two particularly popular series. And that’s good: Netflix has just announced a new program that brings together the best of each story.
Unless you live in a cave, it’s hard to miss the names “Yellowstone” or “Virgin River” , as these two series are so popular. The first presents a long family story on a ranch, while the second presents the exodus of a nurse seeking to change her life in a small remote backcountry town.
In France, only Virgin River is broadcast by the streaming giant. To see Yellowstone, you have to turn to Paramount+, since the end of Salto. But in many countries, both programs are available on Netflix. There was therefore nothing surprising to see the platform give in to their success, to commission a work combining the best of each of them.
Ransom Canyon will be “the meeting” between Virgin River and Yellowstone
The new Netflix series, Ransom Canyon, was presented by the streaming platform as “Virgin River meets Yellowstone” .
According to the official Netflix synopsis, “Ransom Canyon is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga following the intersecting lives of three ranching families, all set against the backdrop of the Texas wilderness.”
At this stage, the series is supposed to be made up of 10 60-minute episodes, inspired by the best-selling book Ransom Canyon by Jodi Thomas. April Blair will be the showrunner, after her work on Wednesday, another success of the platform. As for the title roles, they have already been chosen: they will be Josh Duhamel (Love, Simon) and Minka Kelly (Euphoria).
Speaking to Deadline, Jinny Howe, head of drama and development at Netflix, said: “It’s a series of contemporary western romance, we are simply looking to further explore this niche of heartwarming love stories. It’s a multi-generational family story set on a ranch, and we like to say it’s Virgin River meets Yellowstone.”
“We think it’s going to offer complete romance and, again, there’s going to be a really beautiful setting and a really sweet vibe. It’s still under development, but we’re very excited about it; It’s very promising at the moment.”
Josh Duhamel will play Staten Kirkland, lonely owner of the sprawling Double K ranch. He is described as “unwavering and stoic,” fighting against everything that “threatens his way of life and the land he loves.”
Minka Kelly will play the role of Quinn. According to his description, his character “often found himself in the shadows of others” . After living in New York to pursue her career as a solo pianist, she returned to the Texas town of Ransom Canyon hoping to start from scratch.
At the moment, no release date or window has been given for the Ransom Canyon series on Netflix.
