Baldur’s Gate 3 encourages players to be creative by allowing them to overcome (and even avoid) its challenges.

By using the game’s mechanics in innovative or unexpected ways, many of the game’s combats can be greatly facilitated, or even avoided entirely.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Avoids Balthazar Boss Fight With Underrated Spell

In order to meet the disturbing necromancer Balthazar, players are supposed to find his hiding place in the Temple of Shar, then overcome several waves of several followers of Shar so that the latter does not show up.

However, there is a way to get Balthazar out during the fight, so he can do the dirty work…or die trying.

Reddit user livefoodONLY shared his brilliant strategy for completely changing this sequence, and fixing the Balthazar problem without getting his hands dirty. This trick is possible thanks to a spell that is largely underestimated by the majority of players: Unblocking, which simply allows you to unlock locks.

You don’t have to fight Balthazar. Use Knock. byu/livefoodONLY inBG3

“You know that big fight in the Temple of Shar right before you meet Balthazar, where he just waits behind his magically sealed door for you to clear the place?

Yeah, you can steal his tactic and let him die instead.

His room is just behind the altar, cast Unlock on the door once the skeletons have finished insulting you and the fight begins. After that, you can simply send someone to open the door. Balthazar and his minions will come out to join the fight. They won’t attack you, although Balthazar may cast a Deadly Mist spell in the area, so be careful.

Have your group sprint into his now empty room and close the door behind you. Hide in a corner, really use the Hide skill, or lock the door with Magic Lock and drink martinis.

You won’t be able to see the battle, but you’ll still be in combat, so you’ll know when enemies die. Balthazar’s team and Shar’s team are actually quite balanced in this fight, so it may take a while to finish. Balthazar doesn’t last long with a horde of ghosts on him, eventually almost everything will be pulverized except the poor Golem, who will be around ten HP when the dust settles. It will then be time to check the damage and finish it off. Bam! Two birds with one stone.

I have succeeded in Balanced mode and Honor mode now. The Honor mode fight took a lot longer to resolve, but it’s still worth dodging that stinking ogre and my two least favorite fights in Act 2. I recommend.”

If you want to reproduce this unusual but devilishly effective strategy, you will only need the level 2 spell Unlock, available for the Bard, Sorcerer and Magician classes.

If you are in the process of completing the Gauntlet of Shar, nevertheless be careful of this bug which could well cause you to permanently lose your weapons.
