Octopath Traveler 2 relies on a range of settings and influences. Instead of a traditional medieval fantasy world, the game features Japanese clans, booming cities of the Wild West, and tropical islands.
However, the most unconventional fantasy setting in Octopath Traveler 2 is New Delta, a city straight out of a Charles Dickens novel. This is the hometown of the main character, Tron Thief, and this is where her story of poverty and exploitation begins.
Robbery gone wrong
At the beginning of the game, Tron and her friends Pirro, Scaracci and Donnie are trying to escape the Diamante estate through the sewers. Two stalkers overtake them, and the players immediately get an idea of the battle. Luckily, the pursuers only have one shield, so they are weak to any weapon that Tron and her gang can use.
After winning the battle, players control the Throne and must move to the left through the sewers. If they cross the bridge, they can reach the chest with the healing grapes. However, the way forward is back to the stairs.
At this stage, players will learn about the night action of the Path of the Throne – Ambush. This action knocks enemies down without having to fight them and only works if the current level is high enough. To set up an ambush, Tron needs to climb the stairs, cross the ledge above, and descend the stairs on the opposite side.
Behind the observation deck is a staircase leading to the surface. The last group of stalkers, led by the Leader of the stalkers, will try to stop the Throne from getting to her. The Leader has three shields and can only be damaged by axes or darkness.
How to fight the Throne
Before we continue, it’s helpful to explain how Throne works in combat.
- Throne’s job is to steal, and her weapons of choice are swords and daggers.
- Throne starts with two thief skills: Steal and Darkest Night. Theft has a chance to take an item from an enemy, and Dark Night is a single target spell.
- Tron has learned negative enemy effects, a speed boost, a dagger skill that drains HP, and a sword skill that deals more damage depending on when her turn is.
- Throne’s talent is Blessing of Darkness, which gives her and her allies a buff at the start of the fight when night falls. The buff lasts for three rounds, granting bonus speed and physical attack, as well as elemental attack.
- As a starting character, Tron is a good choice. Her steal action makes it easy to loot many items, and her three damage types can pierce the shields of many enemies.
- Throne’s hidden ability is to leave no trace. When activated, the Throne is active twice in one round. This means that she can create more than one unit of the same type on her second turn, but players should be aware that she does not gain an additional haste point on her second turn.
Back on the surface
Once Tron enters the Backstreets area of Newelsta, she and her team split up and travel to different locations in the area. At this point, players cannot leave the Backstreets, but they are not required to go straight to the Throne’s destination, the Game Hall.
Instead, Tron must ambush the guard standing at the door in order to steal his pass and get past him. In the western part of the Backstreets is a tavern, and behind it is another chest with an Inspirational Plum inside.
The third chest is behind the game room. Pass to the left of the exit and go down the stairs to the water. A canoe will appear under Throne’s feet, allowing her to walk across the water to the stairs behind the living room. Walk to the right to get to the chest and take the critical nut.
Inside the salon, players will meet the leaders of the Father and Mother gang. They can also find an NPC named Guardian who can be ambushed by a level 48 Throne.
In the next morning
The next morning, Tron and Pirro have a conversation on the roof of the Backstreets, after which she must return to the Diamante estate. Backstreets is nothing new, so players should head straight for it. At this point, her father will break the bad news to Throne and ask her to return to the Diamante estate. To do this, she will need the right clothes, so her daytime thievery is now available to players.
Theft gives players the ability to take possession of any NPC’s property, but there is often a chance of failure. If the Throne fails 5 times, she won’t be able to try again until the party visits the local tavern owner and pays to restore his reputation. However, failure has no consequences in Chapter 1, so players are best off stealing from all the NPCs in the Backyards and New Delst.
As soon as the Throne has the right clothes (take them from the woman standing at the save point), she will be able to enter New Delsta. There is a gunsmith and a supply in the city, as well as a chest upstairs near the southern entrance to Backstreets, which contains Healing Grapes. Players should take the time to buy what they can’t steal and equip for the Diamante Estate dungeon. They can also get an energy grenade from a chest near the tavern.
Diamante Manor
When players are ready, they should head to Diamante Manor in the northeast corner of the city, where a story scene awaits them. After it ends, the players must ambush the guard at the Throne Room. However, as they explore the rest of the estate, they should expect random encounters. Diamante Guard 1 is weak against daggers and darkness, Diamante Guard 2 is vulnerable to swords and daggers, but resistant to darkness; Guard Dog is weak against swords and daggers, but resistant to darkness; Light Sentinel is only weak against darkness.
First, players must go to the left of the stairs to find a chest containing 1200 leaves. Then, beyond the top of the stairs, there is a room with a Shadow Soul Stone. After encountering the dead guards, players must climb down a short ladder to open a chest containing a long sword. When players see the save point and the merchant, they should continue straight ahead to get an Inspiration Plum.
A merchant and a save point in the next room means there’s a boss fight waiting for you, so make sure the Throne is healed and ready to fight before you enter the room.
How to beat Pirro
- Pirro has 5 shields and is weak to swords and darkness; daggers don’t work on him.
- Pirro starts the fight with Indecisive and spends his turn, but as the fight progresses, he will receive permanent buffs to physical attack power and speed.
- When the text “Pirro strengthens his resolve” appears, it means that he will attack twice in the next round. To stop him, either defend yourself or break his defenses.
- When Pirro falls, an inspiring basket of plums spills out of him.
The chapter ends shortly after the boss fight, but Tron’s journey to liberation is just beginning.
