A well-known French TikToker, Cyril Schreiner, has come clean about staging the kidnapping of his dog, Albert, claiming the elaborate hoax was intended to entertain a waning audience as his social media earnings decreased.
On February 9, Schreiner disclosed that the viral incident involving Albert’s alleged abduction had been fabricated. This revelation followed a widely circulated video depicting what looked like two individuals snatching the pug from a property he had rented.
This fabricated kidnapping comes against a backdrop of genuine concerns regarding pet thefts shared widely on social media, especially with two recent stories about Amazon delivery drivers reportedly taking cats trending shortly before Schreiner’s prank.
Revelation of a Staged Dognapping for Views
In a January 5 Instagram post, Schreiner appeared emotional, showcasing what seemed to be a heartfelt reunion with Albert. Just a few days later, he publicly confessed that the entire narrative was a ruse.
“The past year has been quite challenging for me, ” Schreiner stated in his confession video, expressing his loss of enthusiasm for content creation.
He elaborated, “My motivation dwindled, and I longed to rediscover the joy in storytelling that I once had back in 2016.”
According to Schreiner, the original video depicting Albert’s supposed kidnapping was “obviously comedic, ” emphasizing that Albert was not part of the filming. Instead, a sack of potatoes was used in the video’s production.

“I set out to entertain, ”he admitted before recognizing he had crossed a significant boundary.“Some topics should never be the subject of jest. I regret my actions and sincerely apologize. Whether you accept my apology or not, my intention was never to disrespect those who have genuinely experienced the loss of a pet.”
Consequences Following the Dognapping Hoax
The fallout from this prank has been severe for Schreiner, extending beyond public backlash. He asserted that he lost brand partnerships and credibility as a result of this incident.
Schreiner shared, “I actually lost partnerships, credibility, and a substantial amount of money due to this stunt. The effort I put in cost me financially with little to no return. The landscape of social media monetization has changed significantly.”
In his apology video, Schreiner mentioned that any funds gained from the staging will be donated to organizations that support animal welfare.

Schreiner’s experience is not isolated. Other creators have faced backlash for their staged content as well.
For example, in 2023, YouTuber Trevor Jacob received a six-month federal prison sentence for crashing a plane deliberately to gain views. Similarly, Twitch streamer Kiaraakitty was forced to apologize publicly in 2021 after fabricating a viral incident of egg-throwing connected to her content.
As scrutiny of fabricated narratives increases within the social media realm, Schreiner has stated that his primary concern moving forward is clear: “I wish to express my apologies again to anyone I may have hurt. My ultimate aim has always been to spread joy and positivity.”
