Tokyo Ghoul is celebrating its tenth anniversary, and the voice actors reflect on the intense and challenging early recording sessions.
It’s true, and we regret to inform fans that Tokyo Ghoul has officially reached the milestone of ten years. Launched in July 2014, this dark anime adaptation of Sui Ishida’s manga is regarded as one of the standout series of the 2010s thanks to its gothic aesthetics and haunting narrative.
To mark this significant occasion, an exhibition has been held in Japan, where cast members shared their nostalgic experiences. Two actors, in particular, captivated attendees with tales of the emotional strain they endured while recording the initial episodes.
“There was a particularly distressing scene that continues to resonate with me because I had to scream in anguish repeatedly,” remarked Natsuki Hanae, the voice behind Ken Kaneki, as he described a moment involving his character’s torment.
“Each time I encounter challenging roles in the future, I remember that Tokyo Ghoul was even harder, which keeps me grounded and bolsters my determination,” he added.
This reflects a stark memory of their time on the project. Sora Amamiya, his co-star, expressed similar sentiments, revealing that the experience made her question her suitability for the role.
“I was constantly being urged to lower my voice, yet my vocal range was quite limited at that time,” she recalled. “Performing during intense fight scenes and delivering pivotal lines made me wonder if I was truly capable of fulfilling this role.”
Natsuki also shared that there were moments of frustration where he directed his emotions towards the script. “From the very first episode, I was crying and shouting to the point I ended up throwing the script in exasperation! Consequently, the script for that initial episode is all tattered and disheveled,” he revealed.
Their unwavering commitment has paid off, as Tokyo Ghoul has evolved into a highly acclaimed franchise. The third season wrapped up in 2018, accompanied by a live-action film which debuted in 2017. It continues to be celebrated as a premier horror anime, especially for fans who appreciate stories that delve into the undead.
