Tragic Loss in the Japanese AV Industry: Remembering Meiko Nakao

The Japanese adult entertainment sector is grieving following the untimely death of 28-year-old actress Meiko Nakao. This devastating news was confirmed by her close friend, the esteemed AV actress Hibari Hijiri (聖ひばり), through a heartfelt announcement on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Heartfelt Tribute from a Friend

Hibari Hijiri expressed her profound sadness in a detailed message posted on November 13. She depicted Meiko Nakao as an endearing presence in her life, akin to a younger sister. The two shared countless moments together, often engaging in long conversations over the phone. However, their communication had diminished recently due to personal issues that Hibari felt were too burdensome to share. Tragically, when she attempted to reconnect, it was already too late.

Feelings of Guilt and Loss

Overcome with guilt, Hibari reflected on the situation, stating, “If I had noticed something was wrong and had been there for her, maybe this wouldn’t have happened.” In a poignant expression of remorse, she shared her regret for not being there when Meiko needed support, insisting that she had done nothing for her friend. She conveyed her sorrow with a heartfelt apology: “I’m truly, truly sorry.”

Struggling with the decision to share this painful news publicly, Hibari feared that silence could isolate Meiko even further in death. Ultimately, she chose to speak out, wishing for fans to be aware of the truth and to honor Meiko’s memory. In her emotional tribute, she wrote: “Ome-chan, you’ll always be an important friend to me. I really, really liked you.”

The Broader Conversation About Mental Health

In the wake of this tragedy, AV critic and blogger Ichiken Kanshunshu offered his insights, emphasizing the urgent need to address mental health issues within the adult film industry. He noted that Hibari had previously spoken about the psychological challenges faced by actresses, a topic often neglected within this profession. He expressed concern that addressing these issues might make some uncomfortable, asserting that Meiko Nakao may have taken her own life. Kanshunshu concluded with a heartfelt message: “From the bottom of my heart, I hope Meiko Nakao rests in peace.”

Such reflections bring to light the often-overlooked struggles of adult film professionals and the critical necessity of support systems for mental well-being.
