Introducing Windows 11’s New “Transfer to a New PC”Feature
Microsoft recently unveiled an exciting feature for Windows 11, known as “Transfer to a new PC”. This functionality is integrated within the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE), enabling users to effortlessly migrate files and settings from their old devices to new ones via a local network connection.
Streamlined Backup Capabilities
This innovative feature leverages the Windows Backup process, working independently of OneDrive. It aims to simplify the transition for users moving to Windows 11 25H2, as well as Windows 10 and earlier iterations of Windows 11.
Enhanced Setup Experience
Currently in preview, this functionality can be accessed through the Dev and Beta Channels. During the initial setup, users will encounter a prompt asking, “Do you want to transfer information from another PC?” This indicates that users can choose to transfer files directly over the network during the configuration phase.

Monitoring Transfer Progress
Once the old computer is connected using Windows Backup, the new device will display progress on the “We’re transferring your information now” page. This page also offers an option to cancel the transfer should the user choose to do so.

Final Summary of Transferred Data
Upon completion, users will be presented with a “Transfer summary” that details the specific information that was successfully transferred.

A Modern Take on Data Transfer
While the concept of transferring data between devices is not new—previously facilitated by the Windows Easy Transfer application—this new approach enhances the setup experience. Direct transfers can now take place either during the initial setup phase or by utilizing Windows Backup without reliance on cloud services.
Who Will Benefit?
This feature is particularly advantageous for users with substantial files and those who prefer to avoid cloud storage solutions like OneDrive. Moreover, it is not limited to Windows 11 25H2; it also supports data transfers from older Windows machines, ensuring a broader usability among users.
