After enduring a prolonged period referred to as development hell, the long-awaited Tron: Ares has finally been released in theaters. As it wraps up its inaugural weekend, many are curious about whether it has achieved box office success. A significant factor in this assessment is its production budget.
The latest installment in Disney’s celebrated franchise began with the iconic 1982 film Tron. This original movie developed a dedicated cult following thanks to its innovative visual effects, which were further explored in the sequel, Tron: Legacy, released in 2010.
Fast forward 15 years, and the third film, starring Jared Leto as Ares—a superintelligent program—has made its cinematic debut. Unfortunately, the critical reception has been lukewarm, with the film garnering just 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, fans of the franchise seem to be more enthusiastic, awarding it a solid 87% score. The pressing question now is: can Ares captivate audiences beyond its loyal fanbase, and crucially, is it profitable at the box office?
Determining Break-Even for Tron: Ares
To understand the film’s financial standing, it’s essential to evaluate how much revenue it must generate to reach profitability. With a reported production budget of approximately $180 million, Tron: Ares needs to earn around $450 million at the global box office to break even.
This figure stems from the guideline that new movies typically need to earn about 2.5 times their production costs due to various additional expenses, including exhibitor fees, merchandising, and taxes. Moreover, the hefty budget does not include marketing expenditures, which for Disney films can surpass $100 million. Adding to the complexity, studios retain only about 50% to 60% of box office sales, with a lesser percentage from international markets.
Thus, while reaching the $450 million mark would be a significant accomplishment, it would not guarantee substantial profits given the investment involved.
Current Box Office Performance of Tron: Ares

As of October 13, 2025, Tron: Ares has accumulated just over $33.5 million in North America, complemented by an international total of $27 million, bringing its overall box office revenue to approximately $60.5 million.
Initial projections had suggested a domestic opening range of $40-45 million, and a global total around $80-90 million. The film’s underwhelming reception is even more pronounced given the limited competition, with only Roofman vying for audience attention during its opening weekend.
It’s possible that the simultaneous MLB playoff game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners, coupled with 12 NFL games on Sunday (October 12), diverted some potential viewers.
Industry expert David A. Gross, who leads Franchise Entertainment Research, stated in an interview with Variety, “The movie was tracking well, but interest stalled during the last 10 days and the opening dropped.” He also noted that “the science fiction genre has historically performed well internationally. This film features effects-driven storytelling with classic good-versus-evil themes, which resonate universally across cultures.”
As a result, ticket sales may see an uptick in the coming weeks, yet the likelihood of Tron: Ares emerging as a significant box office hit for Disney appears limited. We will continue to update this information as new financial figures roll in.
