The Asunta Case thoroughly explores the shocking murder trial that captured the attention of Spain – however, one burning question remains for true crime enthusiasts regarding the Netflix series.
The Asunta Case is a harrowing tale that centers around the tragic fate of Asunta Yong Fang, a young girl who was killed in 2013 by her adoptive parents, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra. This heartbreaking story is based on true events and sheds light on the disturbing circumstances surrounding Asunta’s death.
Despite being a highly publicized case in Spain, the murder trial was met with shock when the parents, who were initially seen as victims, became suspects. Despite their conviction, the couple maintained their innocence. Tragically, Rosario died by suicide while in prison in 2020.
Despite the release of the Netflix series, there are still numerous unanswered questions surrounding the events that occurred. One question, in particular, remains at the forefront – to what extent was Asunta’s adoptive father, Alfonso, involved?
The conflicting evidence surrounding Alfonso Basterra
There is no doubt that there are numerous differing opinions on the true events. While some argue that Alfonso was the instigator and perpetrator of the plan, others point to Rosario as the main culprit. Additionally, there are those who speculate that they were not involved at all and that the crime was committed by an unidentified attacker.
It is certain that less than a year prior to Asunta’s death, Alfonso discovered that his wife had been unfaithful. This led to a separation between the couple, which initially had its difficulties but was eventually resolved through an agreement. Alfonso would support Asunta and assist Rosario during her bouts of depression, while Rosario would provide financial assistance in return.

During the trial, it was disclosed that Alfonso had acquired 175 pills of Lorazepam within a span of 10 weeks. This particular benzodiazepine is known to induce drowsiness and was prescribed to Rosario. It was also revealed that the drug was found in Asunta’s system by the coroner, as she had at least 27 pills in her system at the time of her death. A hair strand test further showed that she had been administered the drug for approximately three months. Neither parent could provide an explanation for this discovery.
During the inquiry, Alfonso’s phone and laptop were confiscated, and it was revealed that he had frequented multiple pornographic websites, some of which contained explicit videos of women with Asian characteristics.
There were also reports of suggestive photos of Asunta, as mentioned in the Netflix series. One reporter described the photos, saying, “Some photos of Asunta were discovered where she is seen wearing her ballet attire, complete with tights and a top, and even wearing make-up, appearing much older than her age. Some have expressed concern over the appropriateness of her poses.”
According to La Voz de Galicia’s account, there is conflicting information regarding the events that took place here. One officer speculated that Alfonso might have relocated his laptop, but it was later discovered by authorities with over 500,000 deleted files.
Nonetheless, a Redditor who watched The Asunta Case elaborated on additional information, revealing that they are of Spanish nationality and approximately the same age as Asunta, indicating that they have a vivid recollection of the case.
Viewers are divided over the Asunta Case
The media extensively covered the trial of Asunta’s murder, with one of the key topics being the suggestive photos. In a Reddit discussion, it was pointed out that there is a lot of misinformation surrounding this issue. Contrary to initial reports, the photos were actually found on the mother’s phone, not the father’s computer.
They posted an article from La Razón supporting their claim, which stated that the parents had taken numerous photos of Asunta, including some taken after a ballet recital. Some have interpreted these photos as “suggestive”, but in my personal opinion, they seemed completely normal for a tired dancer dressed in her performance attire.
The individuals continued by stating that Alfonso’s laptop was discovered well after the initial investigation, but it had been wiped clean and did not contain much evidence. The father explained that he did not want the laptop to be found because, following their divorce, he had sent some unpleasant emails to the mother and was concerned they could be misconstrued.
The investigators discovered a significant amount of pornographic files, including some featuring ‘Asian looking women’. However, they clarified that this was not exceptional and that the individual had a vast collection of porn, not limited to only Asian women.
While some hold this belief, there are those who take the opposite stance in the debate. In reply, someone stated: “Interestingly, these same points can be viewed from a different angle and used to argue against the parents. Additionally, there are no other suspects mentioned. It is clear that this was not a crime committed by a stranger.”
The attack in July is the most concerning event to me. I cannot understand why it was not reported. If someone broke in and harmed my child, I would immediately go to the police out of fear that they may return. It is unimaginable to me that someone would simply leave a post-it note on the door instead. The lack of a rational explanation for this and the presence of drugs only adds to the suspicion.
The father, according to another viewer, was charged and had porn on his computer, but it was not anything malicious. This information was supposedly leaked by the prosecutor to sway the jury’s decision. The father had no history of child abuse, whether it be towards his own child or any other child.
Some argued that the media frenzy and Judge Malvar’s involvement in the trial resulted in biased opinions. “The whole proceedings were based on speculation and character assassination, it sickened me to see how the judge used his power to benefit his own agenda,”they expressed. “Can we say with certainty that both parties are completely innocent? No, but we also cannot declare them both completely guilty.”
It is evident that there are gaps in the narrative that may never be fully explained. Alfonso is presently imprisoned at the Teixeiro facility in Spain, where he persists in proclaiming his innocence.
