Netflix has just released Con Mum, a gripping documentary that explores the unsettling case of Graham Hornigold and his mother, Dionne. This addition follows the dramatic rise of the true crime genre, which has seen various titles about con artists since the popular demand spurred by Tinder Swindler.

Now, the spotlight is on Graham Hornigold, a British pastry chef who, in 2020, believed he was experiencing a heartfelt reunion with his estranged mother, who he only later discovered was a notorious scam artist.

During their initial meetings, she lavishly gifted Graham and his ex-wife, Heather Kaniuk, expensive cars, booked luxurious hotel stays, and even whisked them away to Switzerland to secure a trust fund. Despite not facing criminal charges, Dionne has a history of arrests. Upon investigation, Graham and Heather discovered her troubled past, which includes a 1982 arrest where she pleaded guilty to multiple counts of theft.

In Graham’s own words, “I wanted to know who my mom was. This is who she is, and who she has been all of her life. I’ve been side-swiped by a seasoned pro. Just happens to be my mother.” The deception deepened as Graham uncovered that she had fabricated her cancer diagnosis, using red food dye to simulate blood in her urine.
